The state's oldest high school wrestling tournament takes place Saturday at Central High School, beginning at 9 a.m.

The tournament was started by Chattanooga-area wrestling pioneer John Farr in the 1960s, and he moved the tournament when he took over as Central's head coach.

"We'll wrestle all day and have just one break before the championship finals," current Central coach John Lennon said.

Those finals are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. All-day passes cost $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Competing teams are Boyd-Buchanan, Brainerd, Central, Christian Academy of Knoxville, East Hamilton, Howard, Sale Creek, Signal Mountain, Shelbyville, Tullahoma, Tyner and Union County.

"I'm determined to bring this tournament back to its former glory," Lennon said. "The thing that gets me excited is (Bradley Central athletic director ) Turner Jackson talking about coming from Huntsville to wrestle in this tournament and getting beat by some Chattanooga boys."

Jackson went on to become one of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's all-time best wrestlers, twice earning All-America honors.

Awards will be given to the top four finishers in each weight class as well as "outstanding wrestler" and "best match" participants.

"I guess if you looked for a favorite it would have to be us," Lennon said of his Purple Pounders, "but I really and truly believe it is a wide-open race, and I'm not sure the team with the most individual champions will win the team title. It could be who gets the most wrestlers in the medals."
