McCallie School and Brentwood Academy warm up at the Blue Tornado's home field (Spears Stadium) on Oct. 10, 2014.

McCallie has made three promotions in its athletic department, naming Jeff Romero dean of athletics, football coach Ralph Potter director of athletic relationships, leadership and development and wrestling coach and football assistant Mike Newman director of athlete and coach development.

"From a practical standpoint, responsibilities of a modern athletic program have grown beyond the ability of a single person to manage," said Kenny Sholl, McCallie's associate headmaster. "The scope and complexity of athletics have changed in recent years, and this structure will help us maintain our values and philosophy in a dynamic environment."

Romero, former sports information director at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has served as interim athletic director since August. He will oversee athletic operations and logistics, including scheduling, facilities, equipment, communication and marketing, TSSAA compliance, game day/fan experience and the Tornado Club.

Potter's duties will include the vision and direction of the athletic program, with a focus on strategic initiatives, relationships and fundraising efforts, while Newman will design and coordinate programs and processes that support and advance the holistic development of athletes as well as coordinate professional development for the coaching staff.

DSC adds Poole

Heritage High School's Emily Poole signed a letter of intent Thursday to join the Dalton State cross country team.

Poole led the Generals to their third consecutive region championship this past fall, when she ran a personal-best and program-record 19:10 for 5 kilometers and was named the most valuable female runner in the region. She then finished sixth in the Class AAAA state meet.

She also is in the top five of her class.

"Not only is she a top runner, but she is a serious student and a fine person," DSC coach Margie Bruner said in a release. "She will be a huge asset to our women's team."

Poole will be joining former Heritage teammates Natalie Espinoza-Hensley and Mallory Edwards with the Roadrunners.
