Prep Notes: Wampler new leader for Whitwell defense

David Wampler has been hired as defensive coordinator at Whitwell High School.

"We are excited to have the Wampler family become part of the Whitwell family and are eager to continue to add value to our community while striving for excellence academically and athletically," Tigers football coach R.C. Helton said. "Coach Wampler has an extensive knowledge of the game and will become an important part of our coaching staff. He knows the type of work ethic that is required to grow our programs and contribute to the success of our students in their preparation for careers, college and life."

Wampler, who earned his bachelor's degree at Tennessee Tech and his master's from Trevecca Nazarene, has coached baseball, basketball, golf, tennis and track and field. In football, he has more than 16 years of experience as a defensive coordinator.

He has coached in Kentucky and Tennessee, including Coffee County, Oneida, Sullivan Central and Warren County.

His wife, Leeann, will teach at Whitwell Elementary, where their sons, Trea and Tylee, will attend school.

CBS MaxPreps tabs Lewis

Baylor outfielder Lauren Lewis has been named to the CBS MaxPreps All-American softball second team.

A 2015 graduate, Lewis hit .438 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs this past season as the Lady Red Raiders won the DII-AA state championship.

Pounders' Funk moves on

Isyah Funk is no longer at Central - or in the state, for that matter.

Expected to be one of the top returning players for the Pounders this season, the running back/receiver and defensive back has moved with his mother to Florida. The senior is expected to play in the secondary at Palmetto, which finished second in its district last season.

HOF seeks nominations

The Jackson County, Ala., Sports Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its class of 2015. Deadline for submitting nominations is July 31.

Baylor alum sidelined

Tyler Massey suffered a scaphoid fracture (broken bone near the base of his thumb) last month, had surgery and is currently rehabbing with plans to rejoin the New Britain (Conn.) Rock Cats at some point in August.

The former Baylor football and baseball standout, a member of the Colorado Rockies' farm system, is scheduled for a rehab assignment with the Rockies' Short-A team in Boise, Idaho, next month. It that goes well, he will return to AA New Britain to finish the season.
