So much for the multisport athlete. Striking a blow for high schoolers who specialize in single sports, five of the six finalists for this year's Scrappy Moore male athlete of the year award participated in one sport.

The finalists are Hamilton Heights' Abdulhakim Ado, Gordon Lee's Conard Broom and Jonathan Ragsdale, Cleveland's Chris Debien, Rhea County's Chase Sholl and McCallie's Alex Trotter.

The winner will be revealed at Monday's annual Best of Preps banquet, where Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz will help honor the area's top athletes and coaches. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the 6:30 dinner.

The 6-foot-11 Ado is the area's top college basketball prospect. He averaged 10 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.9 blocks per game this past season and has numerous scholarship offers, including from Florida, Connecticut, Memphis, Louisville, Ohio State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and UT-Chattanooga.

Broom, a senior baseball pitcher and Mercer signee, was 8-1 in the 2015 regular season with three no-hitters and a 0.45 earmed run average. He allowed only 22 hits while striking out 98 batters in 61 2/3 innings pitched.

Ragsdale, a 120-pound wrestler, went 61-0 and capped his incredible prep career with a fourth consecutive Georgia state individual championship.

Debien is a UTC signee and 132-pound wrestler who recovered from midsummer ACL surgery and returned to the mat after Christmas, going 24-0 to become the Blue Raiders' first four-time state champion. He was named the outstanding wrestler of the state tournament as a junior, and among his national credits he is an All-American who has defeated four of the top 10-ranked wrestlers in his weight class.

Sholl had the area's second-fastest times in the 100, 200 and 400 meters this spring, then fulfilled a career goal by winning the Class AAA decathlon state championship. The junior also qualified for the state track and field meet in the 200 dash and the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and anchored the state-qualifying 4x100 relay.

Also a UTC signee, Trotter rushed for 2,145 yards in 11 games for the Blue Tornado football team, including an area-record 374 in one game in which he scored seven touchdowns. He scored 192 points for the season and this spring was part of a state-championship 4x100 relay team, which repeated last year's title, and qualified to run at the state meet also in the 100 and 200 meters.
