Strong finishes for Trion, Heritage girls at state cross country meets

Heritage's girls and Trion's boys placed third for the highest finishes among northwest Georgia teams at Saturday's GHSA cross country state meets in Carrollton.

In the Class A public school boys meet, Trion's Ethan Young had the highest finish among northwest Georgia runners as he placed third, completing the hilly 5K course in 19 minutes, 13.25 seconds. All seven Bulldogs who competed finished in the top 60, with Luis Perez (14th, 20:18.43), Blake Johnson (21st, 20:51.63), Ronaldo Gonzales (27th, 21:11.01) and James Floyd (37th, 21:43.82) scoring in addition to Young.

Emily Poole's sixth-place finish in 19:58.68 led Heritage, which had all five of its scoring runners in the top 44 of the Class 4A field. Sarah Buckler (24th, 21:14.19), Caitlin Craft (27th, 21:26.20), Alex Gass (43rd, 22:10.14) and Noor Sabeeh (44th, 22:12.03) also earned points for the Lady Generals.

Trion's girls finished fourth thanks to top-15 results by Brooke Landry (14th, 25:45.55) and Makenzie Parker (15th, 25:49.81) with scoring support from Jenna Chance (32nd, 26:58.92), Scarlet Prince (36th, 27:43.00) and Hope Thomas (48th, 29:51.80).

In Class 3A, Coahulla Creek secured a pair of top-10 finishes, with the boys sixth and the Lady Colts one spot ahead of 11th-place Calhoun. Walt Douglas (11th, 17:31.51) led the Colts - Timothy Hooper (27th, 18:07.83), Missael Fraire (32nd, 18:18.12), Oscar Andres (65th, 19:12.73) and Dylan Renard (66th, 19:12.96 also scored - with Rebecca Poe (30th, 22:33.13) first in for Coahulla Creek's girls.

Calhoun was 13th in the 3A boys field, with Adairsville 25th and Murray County 26th. Gordon Central's girls were 16th in 3A.

In the Class 4A boys race, Ryan Gebelein (29th, 17:42.43) led Heritage to 14th place, while Northwest Whitfield was 19th. Northwest's girls finished 14th without having a runner in the top 45.
