Irish fifth, Signal Mountain girls third in state golf tournament

Notre Dame is going to need luck of the Irish to claim the 2015 Class A/AA boys' golf state championship.

The Irish, who weren't the favorites in the first place, shot a 40-over-par 328 on Tuesday and sit in fifth place, 23 strokes behind leader Sullivan South at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester, Tenn.

Notre Dame senior Reese Scobey shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 16th place individually. None of the other Irish players broke 80 - but none scored over 90, either. Jared Nelson added an 81 and Zach Riddle shot an 83.

McMinn Central is going to need even more luck than the Irish can muster. The Chargers finished the first round in eighth place with a 358. John Houk led the Chargers with a 79, and teammate Seth Ward shot an 89.

Davis Armstrong of Lipscomb leads the medalist race after a 2-under 70. Jacob Bailey of Signal Mountain, playing as an individual, is tied for 13th after a 75 and leads all Chattanooga-area guys.

Christ Presbyterian Academy leads the girls' tournament at 12-over 156, and CPA's Siarra Stout leads the medalist race after shooting a 74. Christian Academy of Knoxville is two strokes back and Signal Mountain is third, nine strokes off the lead.

Taylor Gardner led Signal's Lady Eagles with an 82 - which has her tied for seventh - while teammates Bethany Burns and Haley Buttram each shot 83 for the team total of 165.

The Boyd-Buchanan girls are in sixth place after Zacori Hill shot a 94 and Lydia Campbell added a 96.

Kaitlyn Sneed, a senior playing as an individual for Meigs County, is in third place after shooting a 78 and is four off the lead.
