Overcoming a midweek quarterback change is tough for any team to overcome.

However, Soddy-Daisy seemed to be the exception Friday night at Central Memorial Stadium.

Behind backup signal-caller Gavin Chambers, the Trojans stuck through an hourlong weather delay to grab their first win of the season over Chattanooga Central, 29-6, in a rain-shortened game.

"Monday we made the call to take (Justin Cooke) to the doctor and got the word that he'll be out until about the first week of October," Soddy-Daisy coach Justin Barnes said. "I thought Gavin and everybody really did a great job. It was a tough loss last week, but it was great to see the guys rally behind Gavin and play well."

The Trojans came out ready to play on the first drive after the start of play was delayed more than an hour and a half. In just six plays highlighted by a Ty Boeck catch off a Purple Pounders defender, junior Brandon Davis ran it up the gut from 22 yards out for a 6-0 Trojans lead after a blocked extra point.

Soddy-Daisy recovered the two points less than six minutes later on a five-play drive that ended in another Davis TD run - this time from 5 yards out.

A 61-yard fumble recovery from Central's C.J. Montgomery gave the home fans and sideline something to cheer about, but a seven-plus-minute drive by Soddy-Daisy that ended up in another score widened their lead and confidence.

Chambers totaled six completions on 13 passes in the first half for 124 yards. The Trojans played a conservative second half.

Davis was Soddy-Daisy's go-to man in scoring position - totaling three rushing touchdowns and 75 yards on seven carries.

Both teams will be back in action next week. The Trojans play their first home game of the season; Central hosts Livingston Academy.
