Baylor rolls into Best of Preps girls' final again

Baylor scored the first 12 points of its girls' semifinal Thursday in the 12th Times Free Press Best of Preps basketball tournament. And considering Tyner still didn't have that many at halftime, the second half was just a formality.

The Lady Red Raiders, who have won the tournament the past four years, again will be in the final after beating the Lady Rams 58-17 at Chattanooga State.

Baylor (5-4) will play GPS for the championship tonight at 7.

"We're a new team," Baylor coach John Gibson said. "We're not what we've been in the past. We've got to figure out how we're supposed to play. We were in a tournament in Johnson City and lost a game to Science Hill. Then we came back and beat Elizabethton pretty good because we put pressure on them.

"We're going to win on the defensive end. That's just who we are. We're getting closer every time. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of unselfishness."

In addition to the 12-0 start, Baylor had a 14-0 run to begin the second quarter. The halftime score was 44-8.

"I knew if we got down off the bat, we were going to be in for a long run," Tyner coach Katrich Williams said. "We've got to take care of the ball. We've got to be mentally tough. I don't think we did much of that tonight. They've got height; they've got quickness; they've got big aggressive rebounders - all that. It's hard for us to compete against that.

"Nobody in our district plays like that, so it gets us ready for that. They're a very good team."

Mya Long led the Lady Raiders with 17 points. Cheyenne Lindsey and Raegyn Conley totaled 11 each.

Keniah Watkins scored the first seven points for the Lady Rams (5-5), and that led them.
