McCallie School's Strang-Voges Tennis Center was among the 12 winners announced Tuesday in the 35th annual USTA Facility Awards program. The Strang-Voges center has six indoor courts, each with spectator seating, the announcement release pointed out, and also includes offices, a kitchen, a locker room with showers, showers for visitors, a team room and pro shop. "Great tennis facilities like (this) help us to grow the game at the grass-roots level, and we are proud to recognize them for their ongoing impact on the sport of tennis," the USTA's chief executive for community tennis, Kurt Kamperman, said in the release. The other 11 award winners are in Puerto Rico, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma (two) and Utah. McCallie and a complex in Stillwater, Okla., were the only two run by educational institutions.

- Steven Fisk of Stockbridge, Ga., had an eagle and six birdies in shooting a 7-under-par 63 Tuesday in the Centennial Georgia Amateur's first round of qualifying at the Capital City Club's Crabapple course at Woodstock. Chris Waters of Atlanta and Spencer Ralston of Gainesville are two strokes back. The low 32 after today's round will advance to match play Friday at the club's Brookhaven course in Atlanta, and Dalton's David Noll Jr. is tied for 29th at even-par 70. Lee University golfer Shea Sylvester shot 71 and is tied for 44th.

- The Dalton State golf teams have a new set of wheels for getting to tournaments: a 2016 Mercedes Sprinter van. It came thanks to "several Dalton State athletics boosters," according to a Tuesday release. "We couldn't be more grateful towards our generous donors supporting our program and buying into this vision," men's coach Ben Rickett said in the release. "Things like this continue to help us bring in the student-athletes that we are looking for that can achieve great things on and off the course." Said women's coach Jim McGrew: "We are extremely blessed to have the support that we do have here at Dalton State. With the long trips that we take and the days off classes that our players miss, the vehicle is like a portable classroom in that everything they need to keep up with their academics is available. This is a great resource and one the program will have for many years."
