Drew Viscomi's soccer career at McCallie has included almost every honor imaginable.

But he won't consider it complete unless one elusive honor - a state championship - can be added.

Viscomi, who's entering his senior year of high school, was named a second-team All-American by national website TopDrawerSoccer.com. He's the first McCallie player honored as an All-American since Arturo Rocha in 2012.

"It's a huge honor," Viscomi said Sunday. "It's a blessing, but it's definitely something I wouldn't have been able to do without the help of Coach (Chris Cushenbery) and a great team. They made it pretty easy on me."

He said that while being named an All-American is a "great feeling," it would be empty if he were to leave McCallie without a state title. The Blue Tornado expect to return 10 of 11 starters and should be one of the favorites in Division II-AA in 2017 after reaching the state semifinals in 2016.

"That's something to look forward to next year - to end next year on a bigger note," said Viscomi, who has committed to Big Ten program Northwestern University.

Viscomi finished with 30 goals and six assists this past season, earning all-state honors and being named the area's top soccer player by the Times Free Press.

Cushenbery has watched Viscomi since seventh grade, and the coach has been impressed by his ability and desire to get better despite being "under a microscope."

"He's a really great kid," Cushenbery said. "He's worked hard for it, but the big thing for him is that while this honor is cool, it's never the goal. He wants to make McCallie the best place to play in the country.

"That's what his focus is. He's a tie that has helped make the culture here. He's a guy that's made everyone around him better, and I'm excited for him."
