Ooltewah has leaned heavily on extra-base hits this high school softball season, but the Owls were limited to two in a Region 3-AAA semifinal Monday at home.
No worries.
Ooltewah found plenty of offense in other ways against Rhea County, ending the game after 4 1/2 innings by the run rule. The Lady Owls managed 12 hits in the four innings they batted, took advantage of five errors and defeated the Lady Eagles 11-0.
Ooltewah (40-5) hosts again at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the region final against Soddy-Daisy (28-10), which beat Cookeville in the other semifinal.
The Lady Owls had a three-run second inning Monday, but the big rally was an eight-run third inning that included Mabry Carpenter's two-run home run. The other extra-base hit was Tyler Sullivan's double into the left-field corner starting the second.
"They threw it around a little bit," Ooltewah coach Jon Massey said of the Lady Eagles (22-19). "We had one home run and one double, but as long as we're hitting the ball hard I'm fine with that."
Kayla Boseman was one of three Lady Owls with two hits in the game. More importantly, she threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. She did not walk a batter but hit one.
"She got a hit there in the first inning and she was smiling. She was happy," Massey said of Boseman, whom he added Rhea County hadn't seen much of in the last two seasons. "She tends to throw well when she's like that."
Shelby Sutton and Sullivan were the others for Ooltewah who went 2-for-3. Sutton drove in one run and scored another, and Sullivan scored twice.
Rhea was without twins and starters Ansley and Ashton Hill, who were dealing with a death of an older sister over the weekend.
"It was just a tough weekend for all the girls," Rhea coach Leah Price said. "We're all family, per se. When one hurts, you hurt.
"But no matter what we did defensively, we didn't hit the ball, one through nine. We were solid offensively most of the year. I think we may have peaked at the wrong time. Coming to Ooltewah's house is tough, and they'd already beaten us three times.
"She's a tough pitcher. Mentally that's hard to prepare for, knowing what you're coming into."
* Soddy-Daisy 8, Cookeville 5: At Cookeville, the Lady Trojans scored four runs in the first inning and led by six going to the seventh before holding off a late Lady Cavaliers rally.
"We had a couple of questionable things happen," Soddy-Daisy coach Wes Skiles said. "It was raining and all that. They controlled what they could."
Alexis Trimiar hit two solo home runs for Soddy-Daisy. Cameren Swafford had a home run, Breanna Britton had a double and each had two RBIs.
