MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Meigs County's baseball team took its second straight loss in the TSSAA Class A state tournament Wednesday, but players and coaches didn't board the bus and head for home after being eliminated.

They went to another Spring Fling state tournament to support the Meigs softball team's championship quest.

Even on a losing note, Meigs left the baseball field feeling good about where it had been and where it was headed. Meigs was within an out of securing a win over Gordonsville in a losers-bracket game but fell 7-6.

"It was a heartbreaker the way it ended," Meigs coach Tyler Roberts said. "We could've had it, and I'm still super proud of the way we played. It's just a tough loss."

Meigs (23-12) got behind right out of the chute but countered the 3-0 deficit with a four-run burst in the second inning. Gordonsville (16-20) rallied - tying the game at 4 in the fourth and taking a one-run lead in the top of the fifth - but Meigs regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Meigs was within an out of securing the win when Gordonsville's Bobby Parliament stroked a home run to tie the game at 6 in the seventh. His teammates followed with a triple and a single for another run and the final margin, and Meigs was unable to put a runner on base in the bottom half of the inning.

While the season didn't finish the way he wanted, Roberts believes his team accomplished much.

"I feel like we overachieved," he said. "At the start of the season we weren't even listed among the top three teams in our district, and yet here we are in the state tournament. And we did it with just two seniors, which is very exciting for our program.

"It just shows that hard work and that optimistic belief is going to give you good results."
