Baylor's A.J. Lintunen is in second place among boys with a 2-under-par 70 after Monday's first day of the TSSAA Division II-AA state tournament at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester.

The Red Raiders are tied for third at 304, with McCallie sixth at 310.

In the girls' field, GPS is third at 163 and Baylor is fifth at 171. GPS's Hannah Prescott and Baylor's Danielle Bates each shot 81 - the best rounds among girls from the Chattanooga area - and are tied for sixth.

Memphis University School and St. Agnes seemed to be playing a different course than the other teams. MUS shot 4-under par 284 and St. Agnes shot 5-under 139 while all other teams were over par.

The Owls' lead is 14 strokes over Montgomery Bell Academy, the next closest. St. Agnes leads second-place Ensworth by 23 shots.

Those teams also have the individual leaders - the boys' Goodman Rudolph and the girls' Rachel Heck, a freshman whose 64 leads her sister and senior teammate Abby, who is in second place, by 11 shots.

Lintunen is within one shot of fellow senior Rudolph.

"He did not make a bogey," Baylor coach Gary Partrick said of Lintunen. "He did exactly what you want to do on the first day. He kept the ball in good spots. It was a pretty impressive round of golf."

Junior teammate Sam Marshall went out in 33 but came in with 40. He's tied for 10th.

Prescott had a double-bogey 6 on No. 5. She played the other holes in bogey or better.

"She just played real steady," GPS and McCallie coach Rob Riddle said. "She avoided the big number."

Partrick said Bates' round might have been better, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

"She came out of the front side pretty good," the coach said of the senior's round. "Being the leader of a team that's really, really young, she probably saw how things were going for us at the turn and may have tried to do some things on the back that she wasn't capable of doing. She was trying to be a team player. She was trying to help us be the best we could be, and it probably hurt her score individually. I don't think any part of her 81 was selfish."

Sophomore Jake Levine shot 76 for McCallie's best score; he's tied for 17th. McCallie has a junior in Griffin McCloy, and the rest of its golfers are younger.

"The young nerves showed on the front side," Riddle said. "Then we went to the back side and our top three players all shot 37."

GPS, which got an 82 from Mckenzie Frizzell to go with fellow junior Prescott's score, is one stroke behind second-place Ensworth. The Bruisers are paired with St. Agnes and Ensworth players today. Harpeth Hall is one shot behind GPS and Baylor is seven back of the Honey Bears.

"We've got to play the golf course," Riddle said. "Even if we feel like we're beating Ensworth, we've still got to stick to the game plan and continue to try to execute. You never know who might be coming up behind you."

Partrick said the team titles could be out of reach, but trying to improve their positions is his teams' goal today.

"We're going to take some chances," Partrick said. "We've got nothing to lose."
