St. Andrew's-Sewanee's Hannah Powell played as an individual Monday and Tuesday and ended up taking home the highest individual honor.

The senior was girls' medalist in the TSSAA Division II-A golf tournament at WillowBrook in Manchester.

Powell did not have the first-day lead after shooting 76. But her par round of 72 was the best by three strokes in the girls' field Tuesday. Powell had one bogey on each side in her final round, and she offset those with birdies on the par-5 No. 7 and the par-4 No. 9.

Powell's 4-over performance for the tournament was four shots better than runner-up Victoria England, a sophomore from St. George's.

Softball field takes shape

The GHSA softball postseason is underway, with five northwest Georgia teams already clinching spots in the state playoffs.

The Region 6-AAA tournament started Tuesday with best-of-three series at three locations, with all three ending in sweeps. As a result, south subregion champ Calhoun, north subregion champ Ringgold, Sonoraville and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe earned state berths.

Calhoun will host LFO and Ringgold hosts Sonoraville in region semifinal series starting Saturday.

The Region 6-AAAA tournament starts tonight with three best-of-three series. Regular season champ Ridgeland has a bye and has thus clinched one of the region's four playoff spots.

The 6-AAAAAA tournament begins today as well, with No. 4 seed Dalton hosting Allatoona in a doubleheader start to a best-of-three series. The 7-AA tournament starts Saturday, with Rockmart, Armuchee, Dade County and Chattooga currently holding the top four seeds.

The Region 6-A tournament will take place next Wednesday and Thursday at Trion with eight teams involved. The two subregion champions will be joined by the next six highest-ranked teams in the state's power ratings system.
