Hixson, Baylor and McCallie have secured spots in next week's state duals in Franklin.

With a win tonight against Boyd-Buchanan or East Ridge, Notre Dame will join Hixson in the A/AA field, while the top seed from Division II's East/Middle region will be determined when McCallie visits Baylor at 2 p.m. Saturday.

There are two AAA state berths up for grabs tonight for Region 4 semifinalists Bradley Central, Cleveland, Soddy-Daisy and Walker Valley when the quartet squares off at Rhea County. The two semifinal winners will advance to state, but whether there is a definitive champion is a decision that won't be finalized until the semifinals are completed.

"You can't win a state title if you don't qualify, and that's the No. 1 goal," Bradley Central coach Ben Smith said. "Hopefully we'll set ourselves up (to qualify for state) and then decide what we're going to do."

The semifinals - Smith's Bears vs. Walker Valley and Cleveland vs. Soddy-Daisy - are at 6, and a championship match is scheduled to follow immediately. Last season, after semifinal wins by Bradley and Soddy-Daisy, the latter forfeited rather than wrestle a championship match.

"Everybody's asking me the same thing, and I'm not committing to anything," Smith said. "I will do what's best for my team. We are preparing to wrestle two matches."

Walker Valley lost to the other three semifinalists earlier this season but finished runner-up in District 7-AAA to Cleveland.

"We're just awfully young. I guess we're just happy to be there," Mustangs coach Alan Morris said. "There are (traditional region tournament) seeding implications in some of our matches with them."

Should Bradley get past Walker Valley, the Bears could face another test against Cleveland's unbeaten and top-ranked Blue Raiders, who own a pair of one-point wins over their biggest rival this season.

"I'd say it's 50-50 what we'll do if we're able to get through Walker Valley," Smith said of a possible rematch.

Both Bradley and Cleveland have their share of bumps and bruises, and it's quite likely Cleveland will have a tougher semifinal than the Bears.

"I think this region quite possibly has the top three (AAA) teams in the state, and one of them is going to be staying at home," Morris said.

Bradley beat Soddy-Daisy in the state championship match last year.

"Cleveland is obviously good, but most folks figured they were a year away," Morris said. "However, Soddy-Daisy can be very good at times."

So it is not a foregone conclusion that Bradley and Cleveland will be Region 4's state duals representatives.

"I know Soddy-Daisy builds for postseason, and when Soddy 'upset' Cleveland last year, a lot of folks were surprised," Smith said. "That is going to be an interesting match."

Soddy-Daisy rebounded from a pummeling at Bradley's hands last week and handled itself well in a five-point loss to perennial Division II contender Father Ryan.

"One match we're cohesive and world beaters and get on a roll," Trojans coach Jim Higgins said. "Other times we look like we have six freshmen and sophomores in the lineup."

Admission to the 4-AAA duals is $6.

State duals are Feb. 3-4 at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo.
