RINGGOLD, Ga. - It was a gamble worth trying, Ringgold High School baseball coach Brent Tucker believed, but Thursday's attempt to get at least one game of the Tigers' second-round state playoff series in may have made things worse.

The opening game of the Class AAA best-of-three set against Appling County started on time, and the hosts built an early 4-0 lead, but heavy rain stopped play in the third inning for 40 minutes. The visitors cut the lead in half in the fourth before more rain forced umpires to call the game.

According to GHSA rules, the game must be replayed from the start, which is set for 5 p.m. today. However, due to the amount of rain - with more in the forecast - on the uncovered infield, Saturday may end up being the start.

"Sometimes it rains," a frustrated Tucker said. "It's not looking good for Friday. It was too wet to get the tarp back on today, so now we just need a break for it to dry before we can start back up. Today was nothing more than a scrimmage."

The start of four other GHSA series involving area teams were moved back to today: Heritage at Woodward Academy in AAAA (4 p.m.), Dade County at Thomasville in AA (4:30) and Trion at Schley County (4) and Clinch County at Gordon Lee (5) in Class A public are set for doubleheaders, weather permitting.

In AAA, Coahulla Creek will play its deciding third game at Pike County at 5:30 p.m. today.
