Versatile Ty Boeck leads Trojans over Owls, 42-21

Soddy-Daisy's Ty Boeck was honest after Friday's high school football game against Ooltewah. And he was an honest-to-goodness terror during it.

Boeck contributed almost every way possible as the Trojans, on their homecoming night, avenged a 54-point loss from last season by defeating the Owls 42-21.

Boeck let it be known that the players made the 2016 whipping a focal point in practice all week. Then the senior went out and seemed as though he played with total focus.

He came into the game his team's leading tackler, and he did nothing but look like it. But he also found time to run the ball 17 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to executing a jump pass to Jake Seeger for a 5-yard touchdown.

But perhaps no play was bigger than the one he made on the second play of the second half. With Soddy-Daisy trailing 14-3, Boeck took a short pass from quarterback Gavin Chambers, got loose down the Trojans' sideline and broke through tacklers on two separate occasions on the way to a 62-yard score.

"That definitely helped," Boeck said. "That was a big momentum boost."

And the Trojans never relinquished it on the way to scoring 39 consecutive points for a 42-14 lead. Boeck took shotgun snaps and scored on runs of 2 and 4 yards - the first set up by linebacker Ben Jenkins' 34-yard fumble return - and his TD pass capped the scoring outburst.

"He's still a big part of our offense," Soddy-Daisy coach Justin Barnes said. "If he gets a rest, it's on offense. But in short-yardage, he's tough to handle down there."

Normally running back Sincere Quinn is a big part of the Owls' offense, but after scoring one of their first-half touchdowns he went out with an ankle injury and did not return.

Tylan Cargle filled in and ran 19 times for 138 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown. But with each of the three that carried the ball besides Quinn contributing, Ooltewah fumbled five times and lost them all.

"We lost the battle on special teams," Ooltewah coach Mac Bryan said, "and we lost the battle on turnovers. That's two things you can't do."

With Ooltewah quarterback Kyrell Sanford picking up 85 yards on the ground - much of it on scrambles - the Owls had a slight edge in rushing yards. But the fact that Soddy-Daisy managed to have 52 rushes by the end of the game, along with a 95-yard scoring drive, Ooltewah's defense was disparaged.

"All of a sudden we just could not stop their running game," said Bryan, who also lost key defender Tyler Henderson to injury. "Either we were underperforming, or they were doing pretty good."

Both Barnes and Boeck said the Trojans' point of emphasis at halftime wasn't about adjusting but just executing.

"The first drive of the second half was big, to go out in two plays and score points. "That put us up to within four points. From there on, everything started clicking for us up front."
