Trey Freeman, Piotr Kurleto, Zach Althoff and Jack Kirby capped Baylor School's fifth boys' swimming state title in six years with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay Saturday, and fittingly McCallie's Will Jackson, Ethan Bevill, Max Ransom and Jake Marcum were second in that final event.
The Blue Tornado were second to Baylor in the 2018 TISCA meet in the Allan Jones pool in Knoxville, with 257 points to the Red Raiders' 315. Memphis University School was third with 201.5, and Maryville High was fourth with 188.5.
Second in the girls' standings with 275 points to Harpeth Hall's 353, Baylor handily won its 13th consecutive combined championship with 590 points.
Baylor's Freeman won the 200 freestyle in 1:33.06, a national high school record, on Friday and added the 500 free victory Saturday. Also on Friday, Kirby, Luis Sebastian Weekes, Althoff and Kurleto won the 200 medley relay, in the nation's fastest high school time this season, and Weekes won the 200 individual medley.
Kirby won the 100 free and 100 backstroke Saturday, when Addison Smith led the Baylor girls with a first place in the 500 free and legs on the second-place 200 and 400 free relays. She had been second in the 200 free. Jamee Mitchum also was part of both relays, with Jewel Gordon and Dallas Woods helping in the 200 and Sarah Riley and Angara Sinclair in the 400.
Diver Elodie Nix was another state runner-up for the Baylor girls, and Ellie Waldrep was third in the 100 back. GPS's Qy Celichowski was the 1-meter diving champion.
Baylor boys with third places were Weekes in the 100 breaststroke, Kurleto in the 50 free and Althoff in the 100 butterfly and 100 back.
McCallie's Benjamin Griffith, Bevill, Alex Mignott and Jackson were second to Bearden High in the 200 free relay, and Marcum was second in the 100 back and fourth in the 200 free. Bevill was fourth in the 200 IM, and Jack Patton was fourth in diving.
Gabriel Johnson from the Chattanooga home-school team was second in the boys' 200 IM and fourth in the 500 free, and teammate Luke Massey was second in the 100 breast. The home-schoolers' Grayson Payne was fourth in the girls' 100 back.
GPS was third in the 200 medley relay with Emma Scrugs, Carley Braman, Jillian Cantrell and Murfee Jones.
