Underdogs Calhoun, Bremen survive at 6-AAA tournament

Underdogs stole the show at the Region 6-AAA basketball tournament Friday night, at least on the boys' side.

Calhoun knocked off tournament top seed and host Sonoraville 70-55 in one semifinal, and Bremen added to its already magical postseason with a 67-58 win over No. 2 seed Ringgold in the other. The two winners will square off for the title at 7:30 tonight.

Calhoun (13-13) which started the season 1-8, is seeking its sixth consecutive region title. On Friday, the Yellow Jackets withstood a blistering start by the Phoenix, who led 21-18 after one quarter, but Calhoun clamped down defensively, and stalwarts Porter Law and Davis Allen each scored 20 points to pull off the shocker.

"We came out and hit a few shots early, but they had a big first quarter and we were fortunate to answer early or they could have gotten away," Calhoun coach Vince Layson said. "But in the second, it looked like vintage Calhoun basketball and we held them to five points. Porter and Davis had big games, and our depth showed."

Sonoraville (22-5) will now have to try to salvage the No. 3 playoff seed against Ringgold, which is also reeling after an upset loss. The Tigers (19-6), like the Phoenix, had a miserable second quarter as the Blue Devils (12-15) outscored them 20-8, forcing an uphill battle they couldn't win.

Charlie Crafton had nine of his 20 points in the final quarter for Bremen, which lost by 20 to Ringgold during the regular season. Cade Nayadley led the Tigers with 15 points.

Unlike in 6-AAA, seeding held true in Region 6-AAAA, where the favored Northwest Whitfield girls and LaFayette boys won the titles.

The Lady Bruins (24-3), who were undefeated in the regular season in league play, won a defensive battle against No. 2 seed Pickens, 36-34. Jada Griffin led the way with 13 points, with Holly Heath adding 10.

LaFayette (22-2) got big nights from its two stars, Alex Kelehear and Jon Morgan, to run past Northwest, 75-58. Kelehear led the way with 29 points, with Morgan adding 26.

Also Friday, the Christian Heritage boys upset top-seeded St. Francis 64-62 at the Region 6-A tournament and will face North Cobb Christian in today's championship game at St. Francis.

Top-seeded Chattooga earned a title shot at the 7-AA tournament at Model with a 60-43 win over Coosa and will face Rockmart in today's title game.
