Eovaldi sharp in easy victory

Nathan Eovaldi picked a good night to pitch a great game.

With several of the Dodgers' personnel staff in attendance, Eovaldi pitched seven shutout innings to help the Lookouts beat Jacksonville 10-2 on Friday night at AT&T Field.

Eovaldi allowed three hits - no runners beyond first base - walked one and struck out five in his 13th start of the season for Chattanooga.

"He was able to spot his pitches and work off his fastball," manager Carlos Subero said. "Anytime he finished with a slider, he had good results. It was a good game."

The Lookouts backed him with just their fifth 10-run game of the season and eight of nine starters reached first base at least once. The Lookouts hit four home runs for the first time this season.

Hector Gimenez played a big role in the Lookouts' lineup. He went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a double and two runs scored.

Eovaldi, whose fastball reached 99 miles per hours several times, kept the Suns off balance with his velocity, a complimentary changeup and an improved slider.

"I was able to mix location with my fastball, and I've been working on that slider and it was pretty good tonight," Eovaldi said. "It was great getting a big early lead because it make it easier to be aggressive."

The Lookouts took advantage of good fortune in the bottom of the first. Jacksonville third baseman Neil Sellers missed a foul pop that would have ended the inning.

Gimenez followed with a double down the right field line. Kyle Russell singled him home, and Travis Denker plated Russell with a double off the center field wall.

"They made a mistake and we took advantage of it," Subero said.

Chattanooga created more scoring in the bottom of the second. They loaded the bases before Gimenez launched a first-pitch fastball over the center field fence for a 6-0 lead.

"I was looking fastball because I knew he wanted to get ahead in the count," Gimenez said. "I put a good swing on the ball and it went out."

Jaime Pedroza added a solo homer in the fifth inning, and Alfredo Silverio followed a single by Eovaldi with a home run to center for a 9-0 lead in the sixth. Kyle Russell added a solo shot in the seventh inning.

"We knew that [Dallas Trahern] likes to throw a lot of fastballs and when we have that, we have to be aggressive," Gimenez said. "We put the ball in play and made something happen."
