Scott Stevens wins state PGA Junior title

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Scott Stevens of Chattanooga won the 2012 Tennessee Section Junior PGA Championship at Cookeville Golf Club in a playoff Tuesday, and Manchester's Andy Stout was one of the other four golfers finishing the two-day tournament 7-under-par 133. Chattanooga's Lake Johnson and Crossville's Logan Stewart tied for 19th at 144, and Hixson's Zac Bombassi, Crossville's Spencer Scarbrough and Ringgold's John Blevins shot 147, 148 and 150. Johnson tied for fourth and Bombassi tied for sixth in the 13-15 age group, also headed by Stevens. Crossville's Hogan Herring was second by a stroke at 70 (37-33) in the 12-under division, and Athens' Cade Puryear was third at 78. Emily Williams of Lawrenceburg was the girls' winner with a 139, and Ooltewah's Samantha Griffith shared 17th place at 155. Decatur's Kaitlyn Sneed was third in the 13-15 age group at 160, and Manchester's Ashley Gilliam was seventh at 174.

Tennis

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga players Stephen Crofford and Sam Parfitt have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes for 2012. Parfitt, a native of Norwich, England, who has finished his collegiate eligibility and expects to graduate in December with a degree in history, missed most of the spring-semester season with a wrist injury but had a 3.70 grade point average in the 2011-12 school year. Crofford, a senior political science major from Franklin, Tenn., went 10-10 in doubles and had a 3.63 GPA.

Football

* Carson-Newman College senior center Kevin Day from Soddy-Daisy is a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for 2012. No school has more than one nominee, and an 11-player team covering the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II and III and the NAIA will be announced in late September. Day was cited for "an impressive resume of community service accomplishments, which include donating bone marrow to his sister, assisting those with special needs at Morristown's Manley Baptist Church as a part of the Best Buddies program and visiting the Knoxville Children's Hospital to support patients and family members." Tennessee and Georgia quarterbacks Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray are among the Good Works nominees at the Football Bowl Subdivision level.

Baseball

* MARIETTA, Ga. -- After a 5-0 win Monday over the Long Island Whalers, the Chattanooga Cyclones are 3-1 in pool play at the 240-team World Wood Bat 16-under national baseball tournament. David Culpepper and Charlie Ward pitched a combined one-hitter and Bradley Smith had a double, a single, a run and an RBI while Jake Wyrick also had two hits and scored a run against the Whalers. Tyler Reed was the winning pitcher in a 9-1 five-inning defeat of Foundation Sports, when Cory Edgemon and Kaleb Hill each batted in two runs. Wyrick and Smith did the pitching and Brody Binder had three hits and six RBIs in a 12-2 five-inning victory over USA Athletic Nationals, while Kyle Kapherr, Hunter Mercer and Edgemon had two hits each. Hill had two hits and scored a run in the Cyclones' 5-2 loss Sunday to the Minnesota Blizzard, and starting pitcher Justin Glover allowed only one earned run in five innings.
