Barons nip Lookouts on Smith homer

HOOVER, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons used an ex-Lookout to edge Chattanooga 1-0 in Southern League baseball Thursday night.

Corey Smith, who played for Chattanooga during the 2010 and '11 seasons, hit a two-out home run to left field in the sixth inning off Red Patterson to provide the difference for Birmingham.

Barons starting pitcher Pedro Hernandez worked into the eighth inning, allowing just four hits. Allen Webster got the start for the Lookouts (27-27) and worked four scoreless innings, yielding one hit while striking out four.

Game five of the five-game series is tonight at 8:05 EDT. Ethan Martin (5-1, 3.28 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lookouts, with Matt Wickswat (1-3, 11.37) scheduled for the Barons.
