Birmingham Barons win 9-1, end Chattanooga Lookouts' winning streak at three

The Birmingham Barons scored five runs in the first two innings and three in the final two to beat Chattanooga 9-1 and end the Lookouts' win streak at three.

However, Chattanooga did not lose any ground in the Southern League's North Division standings as leader Montgomery and Tennessee also lost.

Montgomery (8-3) maintained a 1 1/2-game lead over the Lookouts and Smokies, who are both 7-5.

The Barons (6-6) ended a two-game losing streak behind four pitchers. Brandon Brennan, their third of the night, got the win by allowing only one hit over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Starter Blair Walters also gave up one hit over 3 1/3 innings but was charged with one earned run. Tyler Barnett pitched two-thirds of an inning and walked one, and Nolan Sanburn pitched no-hit ball in the eighth and ninth.

Chattanooga starter Ryan Eades (5-4) was shelled in four innings. While walking three, he also gave up six earned runs and eight hits. Corey Williams did provide something of a bright spot with three innings of shutout relief.

While first baseman D.J. Hicks was the only Lookout with multiple hits - two of the team's five - Birmingham completed the night with 13 hits and six batters with multi-hit games.

Eddy Alvarez, Joey DeMichele and Keenyan Walkeer each was 2-for-4, Adam Engel was 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs, and Trey Michalczewski added two RBIs on a 2-for-5 night. Though he had just one hit, Courtney Hawkins also had two RBIs.

Hawkins and Alvarez had doubles and Engel a triple, while Walker, Alvarez and Engel added stolen bases.

The series resumes this morning at 11:15.
