Around the Region: Seth Eagleson's school record paces Lee runners' victory

Seth Eagleson broke his Lee University 8-kilometer record in pacing the Flames to victory Friday in the 39-team Queens Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., and Audrey Smith set a school women's 5k record as the Lady Flames finished fourth. Eagleson was sixth out of 365 runners in 24:25.7, beating his previous-record 24:30 on the same course last year, with teammates Christian Noble, Harold Smith and Brandon Raleigh seventh through ninth and Bryan College's Tyler Boone 12th. Lee's Tucker Hindle was 44th. Smith was sixth also in the 5k in 17:48.4, breaking Maggie Opelt's five-year-old school standard of 17:49.55, and Lee's Amy Carpenter and Becca Umbarger were 35th and 49th with Tennessee Wesleyan's Hannah Rhodes 42nd. TWU was 11th in the women's race won by Davidson and 15th in the men's.

* Daniel Goetz won the Moccasin Bend 10k race Saturday morning by more than two minutes, as he finished in 34 minutes, 51 seconds with masters winner Ryan Shrum, grand masters winner Tim Ensign, Tripp McCallie and Doug Daniel second through fifth in 37:09, 37:35, 37:42 and 37:51. Lisa Logan was the first female finisher and 15th overall in 46:51, with Karen Leavitt the women's runner-up and masters winner and 19th in 48:38. Stephanie Lyons was the 5k overall winner in 20:25; Thomas Maurer was the men's winner in 20:44.

Soccer

* Charlie Clarke had three goals and an assist to Rafael Mentzingen as the Bryan College men's soccer team improved to 10-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 4-1 homecoming win Saturday against Milligan, and the Bryan women won 3-2 and are 8-5, 4-1. Joe Goreham and Kevin Roenpage assisted on Clarke's two scores in the first 30 minutes. Morgana Hardt da Silva had eight saves for the Lady Lions, whose goals came from Hana Mizoguchi, Paige Klose and Anna Sanders. Sanders' winner was at 82:45.

* Tennessee Wesleyan played its AAC soccer doubleheader at St. Andrews a day early to beat Hurricane Matthew and won 7-2 in the men's game and tied 1-1 in the women's on Friday. OT Bah scored three first-half goals and Jake McBrayer netted three in the second half, along with one from Joe Taylor, for the Bulldogs (8-1-3, 4-0), who outshot their hosts 25-8, 13-3 on goal. For the Lady Bulldogs (6-4-1, 2-2-1), Dayna Randall scored the equalizer at 89:07 after St. Andrews scored at 88:42.

* The suddenly potent Covenant College men's soccer team won 6-1 in a USA South game for the second day in a row, this time over LaGrange, and the Lady Scots completed the sweep with a 1-0 victory. Carl Simakoff scored three goals for the Scots (3-8-2, 3-4), who had totaled 10 goals in their first 11 matches, and T.J. Munzel, Jesse Riggs and Joseph Franks also scored. Matt Morefield, Riggs, Josh Brower and Isaac Johnson had assists. Anna Porch assisted on Rebekah Gravitt's goal at 63:32 for the Lady Scots (10-2, 8-1).

Golf

* David Noll Jr. of Dalton lost 5 and 3 in the quarterfinals Saturday of the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship to Kane Whitehurst of Duluth, who then beat Chris Waters of Atlanta in the semifinals and plays Stan Gann Jr. of Bonaire this morning for the championship. The tournament is being played at Rivermont Golf Club at Johns Creek, Ga.

* Matt Crowder of Cleveland finished in a tie for 20th at 232 in the Tennessee Mid-Amateur Championship at Nashville Golf & Athletic Club, and Chattanooga's Winston Brown and Rossville's Shonn Weldon finished at 237 and 238. Phillip Lee of White Bluff won with a 212, one stroke better than Nashville's Joseph Deraney.

Field Hockey

* Centre College beat Sewanee 3-1 in Southern Athletic Association field hockey Saturday at Sewanee, with Caroline Brotzge, Ceci Vollbrecht and Cole Jordan scoring for the Colonels (9-3, 3-1). Ceara Caffrey gave the Tigers (4-7, 1-3) a lead just 1:45 into the match, but they ultimately were outshot 21-9. Katya Waters made six saves in defeat.

Football

* Mike Keith, the radio Voice of the Titans and a Chattanooga resident during part of his youth, will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is welcome. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Softball

* The UTC softball booster organization, the Lady Moc RBI Club, will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the team's indoor practice facility at Warner Park, and the public is invited. Coach Frank Reed will give a review of the fall practice season, and the club will discuss plans for the Blue-Gold game and cookout next Saturday.
