Ten youth division champions and 19 elite male and female champs were determined in two rings Saturday night at the Chattanooga Convention Center, as the USA Boxing Eastern Elite Qualifier and Regional Open Championships came to an end before a lively crowd.
All the finalists qualified for the national tournament Dec. 3-9 in Salt Lake City, where elite winners will make the 2018 United States team.
One of the winners in Chattanooga was 19-year-old Delante "Tiger" Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, a past youth world champion who competed in late August in the Elite Men's World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. He won the 141-pound title Saturday night.
Former junior and youth national champ Marc Castro of Fresno, Calif. - a two-time world amateur champion - is in the elite ranks for the first time at age 18 and won the national qualifier at 123 pounds. And Keyshawn Davis of Norfolk, Va., proved 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson prophetic by taking the 132 title.
Two-time world champion Jajaira Gonzalez of Fountain, Colo., won the female 132 final over junior world champ Lupe Gutierrez of Sacramento, Calif.
Other female elite winners Saturday were Jazzelle Bobadilla at 106, Maryguenn Vellinga at 112, Mikiah Kreps at 119, Nepthateria Miller at 125, Destiny Jones at 141, Oshae Jones at 152, Leah Cooper at 165 and Amber Montoya at 178.
The other male elite champs were Timothy Jarman at 108, Saleto Henderson at 114, Jaquan McElroy at 152, Rahim Gonzalez at 165, Khlalil Coe at 178, Marquise Williams at 201 and Ramel Clasasblanca at 201-plus.
