Area Sports Notes: Jonathan Rone wins $5,000 at drag strip

Jonathan Rone of Lebanon, Tennessee, won the Super Pro drag-racing class and $5,000 this past Saturday at Brainerd Motorsports Park. Rone won over 75 entries with a 5.45-second burst on a 5.47 dial in his Chevrolet dragster. James Pullum of Adairsville, Georgia, was second and received $2,000 with a 5.35 run on a 5.34 dial in a 1991 Corvette. Mark Miles of Flintstone was the 570 class winner with a 5.71 on a 5.70 dial; Josh Cunningham of Clinton was second with a 5.72 on a 5.70. Josh Ayers of Ooltewah won the Foot Brake class with a 7.72 on a 7.74 in a 1989 Pontiac Firebird; Jason Young of Englewood was the runner-up. Griffin Haygood of Dutton, Alabama, won the 24-entry Junior Dragster class with Jason Wilson of Tallapoosa, Georgia, second.

» The Tennessee Junior Qualifying tennis tournament ended Monday at the Champions Club with singles titles going to the No. 1 seeds in all four girls' age groups and three of the five boys' age groups. No. 2 Jaxon Lamb topped No. 1 Jose Garcia in the Boys' 14s final, and No. 4 Karik Mandla clipped a No. 5 for the 12s title. Top seeds who won singles championships were Sean Presson in Boys' 18, Baylor Sai in Boys' 16s, Richard LaLance in Boys' 10s green, Julia Adams in Girls' 18s, Reagan Welch in Girls' 16s, Corley Raidt in Girls' 14s and Elizabeth Fauchet in Girls' 12s.
