KNOXVILLE -- Kevin Cooper was diagnosed with a mild concussion after Friday's University of Tennessee football practice, but the junior fullback from The Baylor School wanted to make one thing crystal clear.
He was no victim.
He concussed himself on a successful lead block.
"Nobody hit me," Cooper said. "I hurt myself."
Cooper missed Saturday's scrimmage after injuring himself on a collision with middle linebacker Nick Reveiz on Friday night.
"I didn't get knocked back or anything," Cooper said. "Matter of fact, I kind of pushed him out of the hole. But I just kind of dinged myself up or whatever, but I'll bounce back pretty soon."
Vols coach Lane Kiffin said Cooper and sophomore Austin Johnson were solid throughout last week. Sophomore walk-on Sam Edgmon filled in better than expected for Cooper on Saturday, too, Kiffin added.
"Coop really was playing really well, very physical, and catching the ball extremely well," Kiffin said. "Austin Johnson has done some good things.
"They're in a battle there, so that's good to see."
Senior All-Southeastern Conference linebacker Rico McCoy (knee) and junior cornerback Brent Vinson (hamstring) said Sunday they were OK, too. Both players sat out a majority of last week, and Vinson was on crutches Thursday.
"I just couldn't walk that good because it was sore a little bit," Vinson said. "A lot of guys have been getting those kinds of injuries because of how hard we've been practicing and running and things, so I just need to start stretching a little bit more and I'll be fine. I recover quickly. I can jog right now."
Added McCoy: "I'm good. I'm straight. I might miss another week at the most, but it's nothing too serious. It won't keep me off the field too long."
