Trojan, Tornado wrestlers impress

Soddy-Daisy and McCallie wrestlers posted impressive showings earlier this week in tournaments at Davidson, N.C. and Birmingham. Soddy-Daisy tied for the King of the Mat championship with Parkland, N.C. with 2224 points and McCallie finished second to third-ranked Brandon, Fla. in the Heart of Dixie Invitational. Soddy-Daisy had no champions but had three runners-up in Jacob Stevens (112), Turbo Smith (152) and Alex Seeley (285). Jonah Smith (103), Campbell Lewis (130), Blaike Henry (171) and Billy Swanson (215) took thirds, Josh Elliott (145) fifth and Jacob Adams (135) eighth. McCallie was led by T.J. Duncan. The 160-pounder pinned his way to championship and the streak included previously unbeaten Wally Figaro, a two-time high school All-American, in the finals. The Blue Tornado also had champions in Cory Cobb (145) and Michael Hooker (145). Chase Martino (171), Alex Ward (125) and Adam Connell (103) were second. Daniel McClure (152), Alex Kent (135) Tim Westbrook (130) placed third, Ty Youngblood (285) fourth and Jake Anderson (189) eighth.

Basketball

• ROME, Ga. - A 45-point first half propelled the Lee University men to a 79-53 win over Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday. Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player Stephen McClellan made 4 of 7 3-point attempts and scored 17 points to lead the Flames (10-3) to the win. Larriques Cunningham scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Johnny Godette had 13 and Jerel Blocker scored 11 in the win. Michael France scored 20 points to lead Trevecca Nazarene.

• MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jessica Southern scored 23 points and Anna Thomas added 19 for Bryan, but the Lady Lions fell 79-65 to Faulkner on Thursday in the final day of the Huntingdon College Coach's vs. Cancer Classic. Jenna Ray chipped in 10 points in the loss for Bryan. Brittany Carter led the way for Faulkner with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
