Chattanooga TPC pushed back

The Chattanooga TPC golf tournament has been postponed from early October to Oct. 28-31 at Council Fire.

Tournament director Mike Jenkins made the decision Tuesday after consulting with Council Fire director of golf Hunt Gilliland and took into consideration the condition of the course and the well-being of the club members.

"We want to give their members time to enjoy their golf course and give the greens as much time to recover as possible," Jenkins said. "The only other time, in the 18 yars of this tournament, that we've had to postpone it was for Lew Oehmig's funeral."

Council Fire had been closed for two weeks for reseeding and aerating the greens, which suffered in the extreme summer heat.

"Like a lot of places in the Southeast, we struggled a bit with our greens, but they're doing OK and it will be a couple more weeks before we get back to normal," Gilliland said. "We're happy about the decision. It takes a little pressure off the course."

The schedule change will impact a few players in the performance-based field. Some who couldn't make it such as Neil Spitalny now will be able to play. A handful of others have different plans for Halloween weekend.

"I was going to be out of town, and now I'll be back and a part of it," said Gilliland, who will be working the Ryder Cup as part of his national PGA responsibilities. "I think the players will enjoy the course more, and the members are appreciative."
