Tide's Carter still having to sit out

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Duron Carter saga continues at Alabama.

Still without eligibility until his junior college grades are finalized, the son of former NFL star receiver Cris Carter can do little but sit and weight.

The younger Carter played the 2010 season at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College after transferring from Ohio State. His arrival and 6-foot-4 frame was a considerable boost for the Alabama receiver corps that lost star Julio Jones to the NFL draft after last season.

Through five preseason practices, Carter has yet to work with the Crimson Tide.

"The issue is school at [Coffeyville] was out about the same time we started," coach Nick Saban said. "So to get grades posted and transcripts is the issue. That's what we're waiting for."

The paperwork issue certainly won't help Carter's progress in learning the Tide offense.

"We don't know that there are any issues," Saban said. "We have to get the information so that he's cleared to be admitted so he can practice. We have lots of people working on it, and I know Duron's probably a little frustrated because he feels like he did his part. He did the work.

"He got it done early so hopefully these things would get done early. And it didn't work out from an administrative standpoint."

As a freshman at Ohio State in 2009, Carter made 13 catches for 178 yards. He caught 44 passes for 690 yards at Coffeyville last year.

Billingsley hospitalized

Defensive lineman Undra Billingsley also missed Tuesday's afternoon workout.

"He got ill last night in the dorm and he's in the hospital for tests," Saban said. "So we don't know how serious that is and we're sort of monitoring him day-to-day as well."

As a junior in 2010, Billingsley made two tackles while playing mostly special teams in all 13 games.

Freshman offensive linemen Arie Kouandjio and Ryan Kelly also were held out of Tuesday's workouts and listed as day-to-day by Saban.
