Ranked Lee teams top Southern Poly

The Lee University women's basketball team, ranked No. 10 in NAIA Division I, took a 10-point lead into halftime and downed No. 17 Southern Polytechnic 72-58 in Southern States Athletic Conference play Saturday in Cleveland.

Then the 14th-ranked Lee men edged the Hornets 76-74. The losses were the first in league games for the Marietta school.

All five Lee women's starters scored 11 to 15 points, led by Hollie German and Brooke McKinnon, as the Lady Flames (13-5, 5-0) overcame 31 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for Southern Poly's Marisa Stotler. Johnny Godette and Jerel Blocker led the Flames (16-4, 5-0) with 16 and 14 points, and Stephen McClellan had 11 plus five assists.

* At Athens, the Tennessee Wesleyan Lady Bulldogs, 16-3 and ranked 21st in NAIA Division II, got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Heather Gibson and 14 points apiece from Amy Jo Castor and Cody Houck in winning 74-67 over visiting Union in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

The TWC men lost 72-66, however, despite 18 points and eight rebounds from Matt Harper, 17 points and four blocks from Matt Towry and 13 points and nine assists from Chattanoogan E'Jay Ward. Brent Cork's 19 points and 11 rebounds led Union.

* At Bluefield, Va., in another AAC doubleheader, Bryan's 24th-ranked Lions won 67-54 behind Scott Newton's 20 points and 10 rebounds, Dominique Clements' 17 points, Xavierian McCall's 16 points and three steals and Astral Guerrier's 14 rebounds.

The Lady Lions lost 76-68 despite 19 points and 10 rebounds from Anna Thomas, 13 points from Bethany McArthur and 11 rebounds by Morgan Burnette.

* Atop Lookout Mountain, Covenant's Scots earned a second win in a row for the first time this season, 77-75 against Rust, after taking a 16-point cushion into halftime. Sam Bowman had 21 points and eight rebounds, Jon DeVries scored 20 points and Dominique McGaughey had five assists for Covenant (4-13). Markeith Wilson scored 29 for Rust (11-7).

The Lady Scots dropped to 1-11 with a 59-47 loss. Jessie Blankenship had 12 points and five assists in defeat.

* At Tennessee Temple, Jessica Salera had 25 points and 11 rebounds, LaQuinta Gallishaw scored 18 points and Cherelle James had 17 points and matched Alexis Chappell's nine rebounds in the Lady Crusaders' 83-57 rout of Judson.

* At Chattanooga State, the Tigers and Lady Tigers swept a TCCAA doubleheader by beating Jackson State's ranked men 89-74 and edging the 2-14 Lady Generals 64-60. Philip Jurick and Latraius Mosley scored 15 and 14 points for the Tigers, who had three players with 11 each, and Jasmain Carey scored 20 points while Hiydaayah Williams contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals to the women's win.

* At Cleveland State, Kierra Johnson had a career-high 32 points on 14-of-18 shooting and five steals and Takeya Day had 13 assists and eight steals as the Lady Cougars rose to 16-1 with an 84-55 TCCAA win over Columbia State. The Cougars lost 73-66, however. Terrell Parks led them with 14 points and four steals.
