SMYRNA, Tenn. -- In a repeat of last year's Division I boys' bowling state final, Soddy-Daisy lost Saturday in the semifinals to Wilson Central at the Smyrna Bowling Center.
This time the score was 19-8, which was at least an improvement on last year's 21.5-5.5 loss for the championship. And Wilson Central did not repeat as champion, falling 17.5-9.5 to Smyrna High.
Hardin County beat Columbia Central 21-6 for the Division I girls' title, and St. Agnes swamped St. Benedict 23-4 in a rematch of the 2010 Division II girls' final. Battle Ground Academy squeaked by St. Benedict for the D-II boys' title, 14-13.
Soddy-Daisy exceeded 3,800 total pins in its sectional win Monday at Holiday Bowl Hixson but slipped to 3,483 and 3,390 in its two matches on the Smyrna lanes.
The Trojans trailed 13-3 after two games Saturday, the second one an 8-0 Wilson sweep, and needed to win all six head-to-head matches and make up a 208 pins deficit in game three to reach the final. They won three of the matches, led by Joseph Leffew's 238 and Andy Holden's 230, and flattened 51 more pins than the Lebanon team.
Two-time Mr. Bowling Matt Lyon rolled a 279 for Soddy-Daisy (22-2) in the first game, ruining a strong 243 for the Wildcats' Eric Lane, but Lane won their final two head-to-heads despite a match-best 674 series for Lyon. Holden's 577 was the Trojans' next best total for the day, and he was their only two-game winner.
Lane led the Lebanon team with a 668 series, while Chris Branner had a 638 and John Petty added a 619. Spencer Harper averaged 212.5 for his two games.
