Football Mocs back to work

Football Mocs back to work

After nearly two weeks off, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team resumes spring practice tonight at Finley Stadium.

The Mocs last practiced on March 9. Starting tonight they will practice seven times in 12 days, concluding on April 2 with the Blue and Gold game.

Out of school and off their workout routine last week during spring break, the players returned to the weight room Monday. Coach Russ Huesman said practice will be a little different the rest of the way.

"We'll do more situational stuff, like two-minute and four-minute offense. We'll get into the overtime stuff at some point - things like that," he said. "Stuff that we didn't really get into during the first eight practices."

The two-minute and four-minute drills always get the offense and defense excited as they go head-to-head. Defensive coordinator Adam Fuller said the Mocs will do more scrimmaging than they did before spring break.

"We're just getting as much football done as possible," he said, "and putting [the players] in as many scrimmage situations as possible."

Fuller said the defense didn't tackle well in the first scrimmage but played well on March 9, UTC's final practice before the break. He said he'd also like to see the secondary "be a little more aggressive with the ball in the air."

UTC will practice tonight, Wednesday night and Friday afternoon before conducting another scrimmage Saturday. The Mocs must still have one more practice without full pads - the NCAA mandates that three of the 15 be in shells - and Huesman said that likely will be next Monday.
