Covenant sweeps Emory & Henry

Covenant College jumped ahead of today's expected rain by playing two games instead of one Friday in its weekend series against Emory & Henry -- and moving the finale on Lookout Mountain up to 10 a.m. today.

Covenant also jumped ahead of the Wasps and won 11-0 and 13-3.

Tyler Smith allowed two hits in six innings and Eddie Jamerson pitched a perfect seventh in the first game for the Scots (2-1). Sterling Witt was 2-for-3 and Scott Gillespie 2-for-4 with three and four RBIs, and David Lockwood also was 2-for-3. Those three had a double apiece, Kurt Wiles and Witt each scored twice and Will Cleland homered.

In game two Covenant had an eight-run second inning that included seven hits, an error, a two-run triple by Wiles, a two-run home run by Lockwood, a two-run double by Cleland and a leadoff bunt single and later RBI single by Chris Rollins. Andre Glover was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits in five innings.

Lee played two instead of just one Friday at Emmanuel and won 12-1 and 2-1. Kris Hall (3-0) pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Corey Davis had two doubles among four hits with five RBIs in the first game for the NAIA's third-ranked Flames, and Patrick Merkling got the second win with relief from Matt Passauer and Andy Hillis. Mike Moore had two hits and three RBIs in the opener, and Roberto Reyes had two hits in that game and the deciding home run in game two.

Bryan went to 9-1 by beating St. Xavier 5-2 and defeating Asbury 9-3. Josh Harris was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and he and Tyler Latham homered against St. Xavier, and Doug Stroup was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and homered in game two, when Harris added a three-run shot.

Tennessee Wesleyan has moved up today's start to 10 a.m., and that's still a hoped-for doubleheader against Indiana Tech. Chattanooga State rose to 8-3 by beating the Wesleyan junior varsity 10-1 and 10-0 in Athens.

Sewanee still has its season-opening home doubleheader against Johnson listed as a noon CST start today.
