Golf

• Lee University announced Tuesday the signing of Scott Odell from Claxton, Ga., for the Cleveland school's men's golf team. He is a senior at Pinewood Christian Academy and has had consistent success on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. He missed qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur by one shot. "I am very excited to be adding Scott to our program," Flames coach John Maupin said in the Lee release. "From the moment we started recruiting him, it was obvious that he would be a nice fit for our golf program and Lee University as a whole. Scott has a high talent level and a strong upside, and we feel that we are signing one of the best young golfers in the state of Georgia." Odell said he "chose Lee for several reasons," including the home-like family impression he received on his initial visit and the program-wide commitment "to become the best. ... I also feel like Lee is a place that God is leading me to." He received interest also from Virginia and Georgia, NAIA champion Coastal Georgia and Atlanta Division III schools Emory and Oglethorpe.

Softball

• Girls Preparatory School senior Taylor Battle celebrated with teammates and others Tuesday her signing of a full scholarship to play softball at Tusculum College. She said she also talked to Western Kentucky, Tennessee State, Chattanooga State and Tennessee Temple but that Tusculum was the first to make an offer. "And it feels like home to me. It feels like my high school except with boys," she said of Tennessee's oldest college. "It's small but comfy." Battle, who also bowls for GPS, batted .405 with a .619 slugging percentage and 15 stolen bases for the state-champion Bruisers last spring. "She came to us as a ninth-grader and has done very well in the classroom and on the athletic field," said GPS coach Susan Crownover, praising Battle's all-around work ethic. "Taylor has been running our outfield from the center-field position for four years and has used her speed and knowledge of the game to make us a much better team. This past season she made more than a few game-saving plays during the state tournament that helped us win a state championship."
