Spring City's Strader leads FLW points standings and more Chattanooga region sports news

Wesley Strader of Spring City moved from third to first place in the Walmart FLW Tour points standings with a 14th-place finish in the tour's second 2015 stop this past weekend on Lewis Smith Lake in Alabama, and Andy Morgan of Dayton, the points champion the last two years, finished seventh in the tournament with 59 pounds, 10 ounces. Morgan rose to 16th in points. Strader, who totaled 42-13, leads Luke Clausen of Spokane, Wash., by one point and Zack Birge of Blanchard, Okla., by two. Birge was sixth and Clausen was 13th on Lewis Smith. Dayton's Michael Neal was 46th with 25-2. Cody Hammontree of Flat Rock, Ala., was third among the co-anglers with a 23-13 total, and Taylor Bolton of Soddy-Daisy was 34th.

Golf

* The Dalton State men's golf team, ranked 10th in the NAIA, finished second Tuesday in the 14-team Tennessee River Rumble at Tennessee National at Loudon. The Roadrunners totaled 602 for 36 holes, nine strokes behind Lincoln Memorial, and Sean Elliott tied for second individually at 147 with Tuesday's best score, a 69. DSC's Maximillian Bruck and Chase Jones tied for 10th at 151, and Anthony D'Angelo tied for 15th at 153.

* The Lee University and Dalton State women's golf teams finished sixth and eighth at 957 and 980 in the 13-team Lady Argonaut golf tournament Tuesday at Pace, Fla., and the Lee men were seventh at 898 in the 16-team Argonaut Invitational at nearby Gulf Breeze. Lee's Sam Burrus was third individually in the women's event at 230, and DSC's Julia McQuilken tied for 14th at 236. DSC's Caroline Griffin and Lee's Bernadette Little were 21st and tied for 22nd at 242 and 243. Lee's Taylor Davis, the National Christian College Athletic Association student-athlete of the week after winning North Alabama's University Golf Classic, was fourth at 217 in the Argonaut, and Peyton Sliger and Corey Sheppard tied for 23rd and 26th at 226 and 227.

* Chattanooga Christian School teammates Lake Johnson and Scott Stevens finished second and third at 141 and 142 in the Sneds Tour tournament Saturday and Sunday at Black Creek Club. Davis Armstrong from Brentwood, Tenn., won at 4-under-par 140. Oliver Simonsen of Ooltewah tied for 21st at 155.

Auto Racing

* Marty Goldsmith of Ringgold won the $2,000 top prize in the Super Pro class last Saturday at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He won with a 7.83-second run on a 7.83 dial in his 340-small-block 1976 Plymouth Duster. David Bigham of Calhoun, Ga., was second with a 7.85 run on a 7.83 dial in his 1969 Dodge Dart. Goldsmith also was second in the Duster in the Foot Brake class, to Stephen Halloway of Tunnel Hill in a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere. Kaleb Winters of Soddy-Daisy won the Junior Dragster competition with an 8.90 on an 8.90 dial in his 1-cylinder Briggs-Stratton-powered dragster; Flintstone's Khloe Wilson was second.

Lacrosse

* Both Sewanee lacrosse teams won Southern Athletic Association matches Sunday on separate fields on campus. The women improved to 12-0, 4-0 in the league, with a 21-5 defeat of Berry. The Sewanee men are 7-2, 3-0 after downing Birmingham-Southern 10-6 with a 4-1 fourth period. Mallory Grimm scored four goals and Ellie Murphy, Relly King and Sally Anne Greenwood added three apiece with two, two and one assist for the female Tigers, and Crawford Horan made 10 saves and became the SAA defensive player of the week for the second time this season. Selby Austin made 15 saves and Hal Smith collected 11 ground balls for the Sewanee guys, who got four goals from Robbie Berndt for the third game in a row.

* McCallie School moved up to third in the South region rankings released Tuesday by Lacrosse Magazine, and Blue Tornado senior Zach Stephenson is the region player of the week. McCallie defeated a strong New York team, Bishop Timon St. Jude, 14-4 and lost 14-9 to nationally second-ranked Landon School in a rugged spring-break trip last week. Stephenson won 28 of 48 faceoffs on the trip.

Softball

* Kaitlyn Heath was 5-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored as Bryan College beat Tennessee Temple 7-2 and 9-6 in eight innings Tuesday in softball at Warner Park. Katelyn Bowen was 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in the first game for Bryan (18-9), when Heidi Daniel and Sarah Hundley each was 2-for-4 and scored a run and Carrie Allen knocked in two. Mariam Wood was 3-for-3 with four runs and an RBI in game two for the Lady Lions, and Olivia Gore matched her and Heath with three hits. Raven Pope was 5-for-8 with two RBIs in the doubleheader for Temple (5-15), and Kaleigh Riley was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game.

* Tennessee Wesleyan won 3-0 and 5-0 at Milligan in Appalachian Athletic Conference softball Tuesday. Alyssa King and Amy Lokker each was 2-for-3 and scored twice in the second game for the Lady Bulldogs (21-5, 12-2).

* Amy Wray drove in seven runs as ninth-ranked Emory won 14-0 and 9-1 in NCAA Division III softball Tuesday at Covenant. The Lady Scots (9-13) had two hits in each game.
