Mocs still third in SoCon golf tourney and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team has a challenge today as the Southern Conference tournament concludes at Pinehurst, N.C. Nationally 40th-ranked East Tennessee State is at 1-under-par 575 with UNC Greensboro at 581 and UTC third at 584, two shots ahead of Western Carolina, in the eight-team field. The Mocs did close the gap with their final nine holes, which included a birdie-birdie-eagle stretch for Liam Johnston. Wes Gosselin is tied for seventh at 1-under 143, and Johnston is tied for ninth at 144 after his 70. Also for the Mocs, Andrew Weathers is tied for 20th at 149 and Ewan Scott and Brooks Thomas share 22nd place at 150. WCU's J.T. Poston leads at 136.

* Tennessee Tech's Maddi Everts from Notre Dame High School made the All-Ohio Valley Conference women's golf team and is tied for ninth individually at 76 after the first round of the league tournament Monday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Ala. Austin Peay's Jessica Cathey from Soddy-Daisy and Tech's Lydia Triplett from Polk County are tied for 12th at 77. Jacksonville State is the team leader at 301, one shot ahead of Eastern Kentucky and three ahead of Tech, whose Whitney Robertson is the individual leader at 2-under-par 70.

Softball

* Tennessee co-head coach Ralph Weekly notched his 1,200th collegiate softball win Sunday when the 12th-ranked Lady Vols beat Mississippi State 16-8. That includes his time at Pacific Lutheran and at UTC before he and wife Karen took the Tennessee job as co-coaches. Ralph's overall record is 1,200-392-2. Tory Lewis from Girls Preparatory School was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Shaliyah Geathers from East Hamilton was 2-for-5 and scored a run. The Lady Vols' game tonight against Kennesaw State has been called off but may be rescheduled.

* UTC's scheduled nonconference softball game tonight at Middle Tennessee State has been backed up a week, to next Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m. EDT.

* Bryan College's Katie Sims was the softball pitcher of the year in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, and Bryan's Rocky Stinson was the coach of the year. Sims is 16-7 with three saves and a 2.84 ERA going into the AAC tournament. Also making first-team All-AAC were Bryan's Heidi Daniel, Olivia Gore, Sarah Hundley, Mariam Wood and Becca Zimmerman and Tennessee Wesleyan's Brittany Kilduff, Amy Lokker and Kayla Stevens. Bryan's Katelyn Bowen and TWC's Stephanie Bridges and Mackenzie Hopkins were second-team picks. Bryan's Leslie Nunnelly and Sims and TWC's Rachel Perry made the all-defensive team, and Percy, teammate Kristen Givens and Bryan's Carrie Allen made the all-freshman team.

Baseball

* Covenant College freshman Caleb Bloye from Dallas, Ga., was the USA South baseball rookie of the week after batting .500 with a .700 slugging percentage in three games. He had two doubles and two RBIs and scored a run and is second on the team and second among the league's freshmen with a .338 batting average. The Scots will host Huntingdon in a makeup doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. today.

Fishing

* Burton Bryan of Sevierville, Tenn., won the Walmart Bass Fishing League Volunteer Division tournament held Saturday on Lake Chickamauga out of Hixson. He caught a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 9 ounces and earned $4,046. Rogne Brown of Hixson was second among the boaters with 14-6, good for $2,023. Rockwood's Shawn Strader and Dale Pelfrey were fourth and eighth, and Dayton's Brandon Roop was sixth with Cleveland's Jeff Knight seventh and Spring City's Perry Dawson ninth. Harrison's Greg Lamb was 14th. Chris Seese of Lenoir City was the co-anglers winner with 15-7, good for $2,023. Chattanooga's Patrick McClenahan was seventh and won the big-bass award, while Paul Clayton of Cohutta was 11th and Charleston's Kenneth Goodman tied for 18th.

Football

* The Academy Sports + Outdoors Titans Caravan will make a local appearance on Saturday, May 9, at the Hixson store on Highway 153. Defensive lineman Karl Klug and offensive guard Chance Warmack are Tennessee Titans players scheduled for the 5 p.m. visit for meeting fans and signing autographs. The Caravan will make 20 stops in three states May 2-9.
