Lady Mocs win 4-2 at MTSU and more Chattanooga region sports news

Sarah Beth Roberts homered and Jesslyn Stockard hit a two-run double in the fourth inning, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team won 4-2 in a nonconference game Tuesday evening at Middle Tennessee State. Criket Blanco was 2-for-3 with a sixth-inning homer for UTC (31-11), and Cori Jennings (13-5) was credited with the pitching win as she, Taylor Deason and Kailey Palazzola (third save) held MTSU (20-27) to two runs on nine hits.

* Sewanee freshman pitcher and utility player Shayla Vandergriff from Marion County High School earned All-Southern Athletic Association softball honorable mention for 2015.

Baseball

* Logan Campbell and four relief pitchers held Tusculum to seven hits and a single run as Lee University defeated visiting Tusculum 3-1 in nonconference NCAA Division II baseball Tuesday night. Ben Holland hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season, Nathan Wierzgac and Josh Tate also had RBIs and Chris Adams was 2-for-4 for Lee (30-17-1). Kyle Briner got credit for the pitching win. Jeremiah Tullidge was 3-for-4 for the Pioneers (29-19).

* Sewanee sophomores Jackson Cooper and Tony Dykes were named to the 2015 All-SAA baseball second team while Tigers teammates Tyler Minkkinen, Ben Clune and Ryan Tillman received honorable mention. Cooper led the league in triples and was among the leaders in hits, doubles, total bases, RBIs and runs. Dykes batted .375.

Lacrosse

* Sewanee's Michele Dombrowski was the SAA women's lacrosse coach of the year and the Tigers' Ellie Murphy was the offensive player of the year. The Tigers are 17-1, losing only in the SAA tournament final this past Sunday. Murphy, who had 36 goals and 34 assists, was joined on the All-SAA first team by teammates Mallory Grimm, Sally Anne Greenwood, Relly King, Alexis Crittenden and Dori Wilson. Sewanee's Crawford Horan and Katie Riddle made the second team, and Wittney Reed received honorable mention.

* Sewanee goalkeeper Selby Austin was the SAA men's lacrosse defensive player of the year, and Robbie Berndt was the newcomer of the year. They were joined on the All-SAA first team by fellow Tigers Matthew Stiefel, Cotter Brown, Hal Smith and George Pratt. Matt McJunkin and Jake Rubenstein were Sewanee All-SAA second-teamers, and Jimmy Parker and Wil Rainer earned honorable mention from the league champions. Austin led the SAA in goals-against average (7.83) and total goals allowed and was third in save percentage at .561. Freshman Berndt also was the NCAA Division II national player of the week for Lacrosse Magazine for his performance in the SAA tournament.
