Soddy-Daisy's Nunley co-pitcher of week in SEC and more Chattanooga region sports news

Kentucky junior Kelsey Nunley from Soddy-Daisy was honored as Southeastern Conference co-pitcher of the week for the first softball awards period of 2016. She pitched 13 innings in the Wildcats' opening weekend and allowed only three hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 batters. She pitched a two-hitter in a 3-1 defeat of fifth-ranked Florida State, which won its other three games during the weekend. Nunley has a 59-22 collegiate record, leaving her nine wins short of the program record, and her 1.96 career earned run average is the best in program history.

Basketball

* The Dalton State men's basketball team, ranked 12th in NAIA Division I, beat NCAA Division II member Erskine 68-49 on Monday at Due West, S.C. Jamaine Burrey led DSC (20-3) in scoring with 14 points in only 14 minutes of playing time. Sean Tate scored 12 and Jordan Bowling had nine points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes. Ladaris Green had 14 rebounds.

* Middle Georgia State came to Chattanooga and beat both Tennessee Temple basketball teams Monday, 62-49 in the women's game and 74-70 in the men's. Shaketa Hodges had 38 points and 10 rebounds for the winning women, countering 20 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots for Temple's Angel Foster, 18 points for Amanda Rector and five steals, five assists and eight rebounds for Kirsten Fowler. Cameron High and Weedlens Beauvil each scored 17 points in defeat for the Crusaders, High with 10 rebounds and Beauvil with five 3-point baskets, and Justin Hendrix provided seven assists.

* Veshawn Bell scored 14 points and Cameron Sherlin and Devin Watkins added 12 and 11 in Georgia Northwestern's 83-66 weekend basketball loss to Welch College in Nashville. Dustin Stanley had nine rebounds for GNTC.

Baseball

* Covenant College outfielder Scott Gillespie was voted the USA South baseball player of the week for his work in the first weekend of his senior season. He went 6-for-8 with five RBIs and two stolen bases in the Scots' three-game sweep of Emory & Henry.
