UTC women beat Austin Peay 7-0 and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team opened its 2015 schedule Monday with a 7-0 win over Austin Peay indoors at Manker Patten. Kayla Jones and Samantha Caswell won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, Kelsey Coots with Katie Polk won 6-4 at No. 2 and Kaylene Chadwell with Rachele Gazzola won 6-0 at No. 3, and all six singles matches were straight-sets victories for the Mocs. The closest was 6-4, 6-0. The Mocs host Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. Saturday at McCallie School.

* The UTC men's tennis team dropped to 0-2 with a 7-0 loss Monday at North Carolina, which is No. 6 in the ITA preseason rankings for NCAA Division I. The Mocs' John Peacey and Lucas Plesky played the Tar Heels' No. 1 doubles team close with a 6-4 loss; that UNC duo included Brayden Schnur, who is ranked No. 2 nationally in singles.

Basketball

* The Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team is 18-1 this season after beating Tennessee Temple 76-51 on Monday in Athens. Armeka Booker scored 18 points and Jenna Adams and Shira Buley had 15 and 13 points and eight and 13 rebounds in the win, while Melanie Barker and Buley had five and four assists. Amanda Rector scored 16 points and Angel Foster and Kristiana Purvis tallied 11 each for Temple (6-10), Foster with 10 rebounds.

* The basketball Bobcats of Georgia Northwestern Technical College lost 73-59 to Oxford College and 84-54 to Paramount Sports Academy from Albany, Ga., in the Oxford tournament this past weekend in Atlanta. Veshaen Bell scored 21 points with 5-of-8 3-point shooting for the Bobcats (5-11) on Friday, when Cody Cochran was 3-of-4 on 3s and scored 12 points. Saturday, Cameron Shropshire scored 18 points and Tyler Shropshire had eight rebounds and six assists in defeat.
