Irish advance to state wrestling duals and more Chattanooga region sports news

Following a three-way District 5 regular season deadlock and a Saturday wrestle-off, Notre Dame will be going to the state duals Friday and Saturday in Franklin. The Irish bested East Ridge for the second time in three days after East Ridge had defeated Central. Notre Dame will be returning to the state duals for the first time since 2009 when they finished as Class A/AA runner-up. However, Notre Dame won three straight A/AA titles from 2006 to 2008. Also going from the Chattanooga area are Hixson (A/AA), Cleveland and Bradley Central (AAA) and Baylor and McCallie (Division II-AA).

Basketball

* The Sewanee basketball team's were swept on the road in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Rhodes on Sunday, with the men losing 55-44 and the women falling 65-40. In the men's game, Sewanee stayed close with the Lynx early and trailed 23-21 at the half before Rhodes (13-3, 6-0 SAA) pulled away late. Former McCallie School player Jorden Williams led the Tigers (10-7, 4-2) with eight points and brothers and Baylor School alumni Clay and Leo Born scored five and three points, respectively. In the women's game, Rhodes (13-4, 4-2) took control early and cruised to an easy win. Hannah McCormack led the Sewanee women (10-6, 2-4) with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Rebekah Faulkner came off the bench to score 10 points and grab seven rebounds.

Tennis

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team lost a nail-biter for the second straight day, falling 4-3 to Belmont at the Racquet Club. UTC (0-4) picked up picked up singles wins from Lucas Plesky, who beat Robin Demasse 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles; Nick Wilson at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Geoff Tulloch; and at No. 6 with Gino Delavalle's 6-2, 6-4 win over Bruno Russo.
