Chattanooga Jets qualify 23 for track nationals and more Chattanooga region sports news

Led by three regional victories for Danielle Dunning last weekend in Murfreesboro, the Chattanooga Jets qualified 23 athletes for 22 events in the National Junior Olympic Track and Field meet July 27-Aug. 2 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. At the USATF Region 6 meet, where the top five finishers in each event advance to the nationals, Dunning won the 9-10 girls' 100- and 200-meter dashes in 13.66 and 28.87 seconds and the long jump in 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches. The Jets' Kamden Edwards won the 13-14 boys' shot put with a heave of 36-8 1/4, and Lennex Walker in 15-16 girls was second in the 100 hurdles and 200 dash, third in the triple jump and second with three teammates in the 4x100 relay.

Volleyball

* The Georgia Northwestern Technical College volleyball team will be getting off to an early start for the 2015 season. In the schedule released Tuesday, coach Carrie Powell's Lady Bobcats will open Aug. 22 in a tournament at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga. They then don't play again until Sept. 12, at Crown College in Powell, Tenn., and don't play at home until Crown visits the Rossville Athletic Center on Sept. 25. But that begins five consecutive home dates and GNTC will have played nearby on Sept. 14 and 21 against the junior varsities of Covenant and Bryan colleges. The Lady Bobcats will host Walters State in an NJCAA regional qualifier on Oct. 10.
