Johnson faces Warren for Women's City title and more Chattanooga region sports news

A pair of NCAA Division I golfers will square off in match play today for the Women's City Tournament championship at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. Vanderbilt's Lauren Johnson, who is entering her junior year, and Tennessee's Blakesly Warren, who will be a sophomore in 2015-16, made the match-play bracket's seeding bear out with their semifinal victories on Wednesday. The top-seeded Johnson beat McKenzie Frizzell, 4 and 3, while second-seeded Warren beat Darlene Werhnyak, 5 and 3. Each is going for her first win at the event. In today's first flight title match, second-seeded Nancy Logue - who beat Sharon Powell 1 up in the semis - will face No. 5 seed Patty Donnahoo, who beat Phyllis Loftsgard 2 and 1. The second flight is also a 2 vs. 5 seed battle for the title. In the semis, second-seeded Lynn Heck won 5 and 4 against Brittany Marcum, and fifth-seeded Evelyn Marie Williams beat Carolyn Maum 2 and 1. The senior division is competing in 36 holes of stroke play, but those golfers took Wednesday off after playing their first round Tuesday. Anna Cunningham is the gross score leader at 83, one stroke ahead of Susan Thurman. Sylvia Friedl's net of 67 is four strokes ahead of Cunningham.

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Wes Gosselin tied for fourth earlier this month at the Spirit of America Championship, held at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, Ala. Gosselin's 1-over-par total of 214 was just two strokes behind a trio tying for first at 1 under. Gosselin, who will be a redshirt junior this year, also tied for fourth at the SunTrust Tennessee State Open Championship. Earlier in the offseason, he tallied 7 under (209) at the Club at Fairvue Plantation in Gallatin, Tenn., in May.

Track and field

* Casey Price is moving on from coaching cross country and track and field at Cleveland High School to join the staff at Lee University. Price will continue to teach at Cleveland Middle School, but the former UTC track team member will now blow a whistle as an assistant track coach for the Flames. Caleb Morgan, who is entering his third year as the head coach for track and cross country at Lee, said in a release that the Flames are "very excited to have Casey on our staff. He has had a lot of success the last 14 years at Cleveland High School. I have watched Casey coach in the Cleveland area the last few years and was extremely impressed with his professionalism and the way he interacted with his athletes." Price has been coaching and teaching for 17 years, and Morgan has asked him to work with sprinters, jumpers and throwers at Lee. The Lee athletic programs are scheduled to complete a three-year transition period for full membership in NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference later this week.
