UTC golf teams finish second, fourth and more Chattanooga region sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfers Andrew Weathers and Liam Johnston tied for second with 36-hole 143s after each shot 71 on Tuesday, and their team finished second by seven strokes to UNC Charlotte in the 12-team Davidson College Invitational tournament at River Run Country Club in North Carolina. UTC shot 583, 13 better than third-place Wofford. The Mocs' Wes Gosselin tied for eighth at 146 and Ewan Scott and Kory Webb shared 32nd and 37th places, respectively, at 153 and 154. UTC plays in Auburn's tournament this Sunday through Tuesday.

* The UTC women's golf team finished fourth out of 40 teams in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic with a closing 293 Tuesday that was the second best total of the third round. With Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon tying for 10th individually at 3-over-par 219, the Mocs wound up at 899, two behind Stetson and one ahead of Samford. College of Charleston won the event with an 886. UTC's Cris Perez finished 25th at 226 with a final-round 72 that matched Sauzon for team best, and Isabella Loza also had her best round, a 76, to finish at 236.

* Lee University finished seventh out of 16 men's golf teams in the Las Vegas Desert Classic held Sunday and Monday at the Paiute Golf Club-Snow Mountain, and the Flames' Shea Sylvester was all-tournament after a five-way tie for second place at 144 (70-74), one behind the medalist. Lee shot 603, 13 strokes behind the winning University of the Redlands. Flames freshman Corey Sheppard tied for 12th at 148.

* Dalton State's Sean Elliott and Levi Nix tied for second individually at 214 in leading the Roadrunners to a fourth-place team finish in the nine-team Doublegate Collegiate Invitational men's golf tournament that ended Tuesday at Albany, Ga. Eastern Florida State won with an 860; DSC finished at 886 with Anthony D'Angelo tying for 13th and Macimillian Bruck and Dalton Johnson sharing 16th. Georgia Northwestern finished seventh.

* Dalton State junior Erika Wardzinski was the SSAC women's golfer of the week after finishing second individually in the Roadrunners' team victory at the Callaway Women's Collegiate in Pine Mountain, Ga. She had a tournament-low 73 in the first round.

Basketball

* The Chattanooga State women's basketball team ended its season Tuesday with a 73-67 loss to 10th-seeded Dyersburg State in the first round of the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament in Memphis. Dyersburg (8-19) will face second-seeded Cleveland State tonight at 7 EST. Cleveland State's men beat Volunteer State 86-64 in the late game Tuesday and will play again Thursday. Darrion Leslie scored 26 points and Rico Overall had 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Cougars (11-16), who got 13 points from Q.D. Cox and 10 rebounds from Alex Watkins. In the 11-13 Lady Tigers' last game, Jeda Doss had 16 points and nine rebounds, Kiera Jones scored 13 points, Sydney Sims and Teondra Crawford scored 11 each, Crawford with six assists, and Melva Sheppard and Sims had 11 and nine rebounds. Tamacha Couch had 17 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for Dyersburg. Roane State's women and men won Tuesday's other games, 71-65 over Motlow's Lady Bucks and 99-79 over the Dyersburg men. Cayla Oglesby and Xavier Howard each scored 27 points in those victories.

* The Lee University and Hiwassee College men's basketball teams will play tonight at 6 for a berth in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament starting March 18 at Winona Lake, Ind. Their meeting will decide the Mid-East Region championship. Lee also will host the women's NCCAA Mid-East Regional but with four teams Thursday and Friday; the semifinals pit top-seeded Lee against Hiwassee and Tennessee Temple against Bluefield.

* Dalton State moved up a spot to No. 5 in the NAIA Division I men's basketball poll this week, following the conclusion of the program's second regular season. The first-place Roadrunners (26-3) and ninth-ranked Martin Methodist (25-4) have byes in the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament in Montgomery, Ala., and open Thursday against today's winners. DSC's opponent will be Blue Mountain or Brewton-Parker.

Tennis

* UTC senior Claire Mulyadi was chosen the Southern Conference women's tennis player of the week after going 4-0 in her matches against Jacksonville State and UT-Martin this past weekend. She won twice in doubles with Katie Polk. The Mocs (7-1) are scheduled to host Middle Tennessee State today.

Track & Field

* T.J. Davis from Ooltewah won the men's long jump and triple jump and was second in the 55-meter dash at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational track and field meet Saturday, and Carson-Newman University selected him as its overall Bojangles' male athlete of the week.
