Lookout Mountain hall adding 10 and more Chattanooga region sports news

The Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame has scheduled its fourth induction class and first in five years for May 3 at 3 p.m. at the Lookout Mountain School gymnasium. Ten current or former mountain residents will be inducted, including four who have close relatives already in the hall: Bill Caulkins, Rob Healy, King Oehmig and Eric Voges. Caulkins is going in for softball, Healy for wresling and football, Oehmig for golf and Voges for tennis. Also going in for tennis achievements are Chris Brown, Forrest Simmons and Sue Webb, while Yogi Anderson also is being inducted for wrestling, the late Skeeter Johnston for polo and Toby Silberman for football. * In its first year as a Southern States Athletic Conference member, Dalton State leads the league's Commissioner's Cup standings through the winter sports season. Dalton State has competed in men's and women's cross country, volleyball and men's basketball this school year and has accumulated 111 of the maximum 126 points for those sports, or 88.1 percent of its potential. The SSAC awards points in 15 sports but for the first time figures Cup standings by percent of potential per school rather than by total points. The league also is awarding men's and women's Cup winners as well as the overall champion, and DSC leads each of those -- with 95.5 percent (63 of a possible 66 points) for its men's teams and 80 percent (48 of 60) for women's athletics. Martin Methodist is second overall (72.2 percent) and in men's sports (81.8 percent), and Mobile is second in the women's standings (78.6 percent). After winning the SSAC regular-season championship, the sixth-ranked basketball Roadrunners (27-4) open the NAIA Division I national tournament Wednesday morning in Kansas City, Mo., against Wiley College (21-11) of Marshall, Texas.

Softball

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team lost 4-2 to Syracuse but beat Army 6-0 on a Taylor Deason three-hitter with seven strikeouts in USF's Michele Smith tournament Saturday at Clearwater, Fla. Sarah Beth Roberts was 2-for-4 with a first-inning two-run home run in the win for the Mocs (16-7), when Sam Taylor also was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Criket Blanco was 2-for-4 and J.J. Hamill and Marina Wilkerson had RBI hits. Against Syracuse (10-14), Blanco was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the loss for UTC (16-7)???, when Cori Jennings pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and struck out seven batters, allowing two earned runs and two unearned. The Mocs took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning but gave up three in the bottom half. Maddie Doane was 3-for-4 with an RBI double for Syracuse.

* The Sewanee softball team lost 15-2 and 14-0 in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader against Centre in Danville, Ky., and plays the Colonels twice again today. Caroline Holmes was 2-for-3 and Sara Burklin batted in both Sewanee runs in the first game (0-6, 0-6).

Golf

* The UTC women's golf team shot a 294 Saturday and is sixth of 13 teams in the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The Mocs are at 596 for 36 holes, 17 behind leader Coastal Carolina, with Emily McLennan 10th individually after her second 73 and Agathe Sauzon tied for 11th at 147 after a 72. Megan Woods also shot a 72 and shares 39th place with teammate Sarah Dolmovich at 154, one better than Cris Perez.

Baseball

* Chase White pitched four perfect innings with eight strikeouts and went 5-for-5 with two doubles and six RBIs as Tennessee Temple defeated Ohio State-Mansfield 31-0 in the first game of their baseball doubleheader Saturday at South Pittsburg High School. Temple won the second game 17-1. Ryan Bruce also had six RBIs in the opener, going 3-for-3 with a grand slam and five runs scored, while Hunter Brown was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, Kenny Akin also drove in four and scored three, Trey Hill was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, Clay O'Shields was 1-for-1 with a homer and Chase Burke was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Cody Wilson pitched the fifth, completing the no-hitter but allowing a walk. In game two for the Crusaders (8-2), Bruce was 3-for-3 with five RBIs, including another grand slam; Hunter Brown was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs; Cameron Mulligan was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; Brown and Akin each homered, doubled, scored three runs and batted in two; and Micah Wyatt struck out six batters in three innings.

* Berry College beat visiting Sewanee 9-0 and 9-0 in an SAA baseball doubleheader Saturday. Michael Walker was 2-for-4 with a double in the first game for Sewanee (4-6, 2-6) and had both Tigers hits in game two.

* The Birmingham-Southern baseball team improved to 14-0 for the season Saturday by beating visiting Covenant 6-1 and 6-2. Alex Kerr was 2-for-3 for Covenant (7-9) in the first game, and Will Carlton and Luke Harvey had RBIs in game two.

Lacrosse

* The Sewanee men's lacrosse team opened SAA play Saturday with a 15-8 home win over Centre. Robbie Berndt had five goals and two assists, Matthew Stiefel and George Bukawyn scored four and three goals and Hal Smith won 20 faceoffs and corralled 12 ground balls for the Tigers (4-1),

Basketball

* Times Free Press columnist Mark Wiedmer will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited to hear him talk about the NCAA basketball tournament. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
