Georgia State tops softball Mocs, 4-2 and more Chattanooga region sports news

The Georgia State softball team scored three runs in the first inning Tuesday in Atlanta and went on to win 4-2 over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs. That made the Panthers 19-3 for the season. UTC (17-8) got only three hits, but one was a two-run home run by Sarah Beth Roberts in the third inning. Cori Jennings (7-4) took the pitching loss, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

* The Tennessee Temple softball team rebounded from 7-1 and 17-1 losses Monday to Martin Methodist with 9-1 and 7-6 wins over Hiwassee on Tuesday at Warner Park. Marissa Murray pitched a four-hitter and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the first game against Hiwassee, when Carley Daniel also batted in two runs, Sloane Woodard scored two and drove in one and Cayley Shoemaker, Kaleigh Riley and Jillian McGill each had two hits and an RBI. Amanda Hatfield was 2-for-3 and scored the Hiwassee run in that game and was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Ashley Ivnes was 3-for-4 and scored twice and Kelsey Donoho hit a two-run homer in the rematch. For Temple (3-9), which scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, Woodard and Shoemaker each was 3-for-4, Taylor Tsai was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and two RBIs, Murray doubled and drove in two runs, Breanna Altizer was 2-for-2 and Raven Pope tripled and singled.

* Covenant College's Jordan Brett went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs in a 9-7 loss and 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs n a 4-2 win against Meredith in a USA South home doubleheader Monday against Meredith (12-4, 6-2). Tyler Epes pitched a five-hitter in the win for the Lady Scots (6-4, 1-3), who host Maryville in a doubleheader today.

Baseball

* Berry College scored seven runs in the seventh inning and won 11-10 in NCAA Division III baseball Tuesday at Covenant. Spencer Smith pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits but no earned runs and two unearned for the host Scots (7-10), while Will Cleland was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Perry Rigby and Will Carlton each was 3-for-5 and scored twice. Rigby, who also had two RBIs, homered along with K.C. Simons and Scott Gillespie, and Z Arima was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

* Tony Dykes hit a two-run homer and followed a three-run single by Michael Walker with an RBI double as Sewanee scored eight runs in the second inning on the way to an 11-5 baseball win over Springfield in Auburndale, Fla. The victory made the Tigers 6-7 overall and 2-0 on their spring-break trip. Nathaniel Howard was 3-for-5 with a triple and Walker was 2-for-4, and Jack Whaley matched Walker with two runs scored. Mike O'Neil pitched all nine innings, striking out seven.

Golf

* The Dalton State men's golf team finished fifth at 893 and Tennessee Wesleyan tied for 14th at 920 in the 19-team Eagle Invitational hosted Monday and Tuesday by Embry-Riddle at Daytona Beach, Fla., and Heritage High School graduate Hunter Cornelius finished second at 215 to a teammate in helping Coastal Georgia win by 14 at 867. Dalton State's Sean Elliott tied for eighth at 219 and teammates Chase Jones and Maximillian Bruck shared 12th place at 221 with TWC's Evan Ball.

* Dalton State finished seventh at Daytona Beach out of 14 women's teams, including many of the best in the NAIA. Caroline Griffin led the Lady Roadrunners with a 159, while Julia McQuilken and Erika Wardzinski were at 161. Wardzinski was just named the SSAC women's golfer of the week for the second time in three weeks. That was for finishing fifth out of 78 teams in the Seminole State Spring Break tournament.

* Lee University finished 12th out of 15 teams at 933 for 54 holes at the Barry Women's Invitational golf tournament Monday and Tuesday at Miami Lakes, Fla. Lee's Sam Burrus tied for 19th individually with a 225.

* The Georgia Northwestern men's golf team took a four-shot lead Monday with a first-round 290 in the SCAD-Atlanta Spring Invitational at The Oaks Course at Covington, Ga., but finished fourth out of eight teams after a 308 on Tuesday. NAIA four-year schools Faulker, Point and Reinhardt finished first through third at 585, 590 and 591. GNTC's Jordan Estes tied for ninth individually at 148, teammates Grant Allen and Lanier Guest shared 14th place at 149 and Chase Cole tied for 18th at 150.

* Centre College golfer Alyssa Brown from Baylor School tied for 10th at 237 in the Jekyll Island women's tournament this past weekend.

Lacrosse

* Sewanee's Matthew Stiefel was the Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse offensive player of the week after scoring nine goals and adding two assists in wins over Wittenberg and Centre.

* The Sewanee women's lacrosse team improved to 7-0 with a 19-12 win over visiting Ramapo on Monday. Relly King had five goals and an assist, Katie Riddle and Ellie Murphy had four goals each with three and two assists, Wittney Reed had three goals and an assist and Crawford Horan made nine saves.

Tennis

* Milligan College junior Jackson Lenoir from Chattanooga and Arts & Sciences was the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's tennis player of the week. He and Fernando Gonzalez went 3-0 in doubles, wiping out a 7-3 deficit in one pro-set match with six straight points.
