Dalton State in NAIA quarterfinals and more Chattanooga region sports news

In its first year of postseason eligibility, Dalton State College has reached the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I men's basketball tournament. The sixth-ranked Roadrunners defeated Evangel from Missouri 85-74 on Friday and will play No. 3 seed Cal State San Marcos at 11:30 a.m. EDT today in Memorial Auditorium. The Cougars (30-3) rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to edge Arizona Christian 61-59. NAIA rebounding leader Ladaris Green had 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for Dalton State (29-4), and Jordan Bowling and Jamaine Burrey each had 17 points and three steals, Bowling adding seven rebounds. Sean Tate contributed 13 points and six assists. Korry Tillery and Billy Thompson II had 20 and 17 points and 10 and nine rebounds for Evangel (21-13), which trailed by 17 points at halftime but got the deficit down to eight midway through the second half and cut a restored 16-point margin to seven with 1:39 to go. "Our team plays with so much heart and togetherness, and it inspires me as a coach, and they are busting their butts striving to make the college, the community and each other proud," Roadrunners coach Tony Ingle said in a DSC release. "Ladaris and Jordan were sensational on the boards and scoring, as well as Jamaine getting hot at the right time."

Swimming

* Baylor School and Baylor Swim Club athlete Trey Freeman broke the 13-14 national age-group record for the 200 LCM freestyle with a 1:53.31 Thursday night at the 2015 NCSA Junior National Championships in Orlando, Fla. The previous record of 1:53.52 was set in 2009 by current Stanford University junior Tom Kremer, who was third in 2013 and ninth in 2014 in the NCAA Championships 200 free. Freeman set a Southeastern Swimming 13-14 record in the 1000 free on Tuesday, with a 9:07.58 that made him sixth overall in the meet (against older swimmers) and is the fastest age-group time in the nation this year by 13 seconds -- and the third fastest of all time. His 500-yard free time of 4:27.52 also was the fastest time in the country for his age this year. As the meet concludes, he will swim today in the 200 individual medley and 1650 freestyle.

Lacrosse

* Mallory Grimm had six goals, including three of the first four of the match, and three assists as the Sewanee women's lacrosse team improved Friday to 9-0 for the season with its third Southern Athletic Association victory, 23-9 over visiting Oglethorpe. Katie Riddle had three goals and two assists and Brita Budvig and Janie Hannon each had three goals and one assist for the Tigers, who got two goals and two assists from Ellie Murphy and two goals and one assist from Relly King.

Baseball

* Sewanee lost 17-3 and 14-5 to Framingham State in baseball games Friday in Winter Park, Fla. That dropped the Tigers to 3-3 for their RussMatt Invitational trip to the Sunshine State and 7-10 for the season.

Softball

* Freshman Madison Gossett from Dade County got her eighth pitching win this softball season for Brenau in the first game of a 5-2, 6-2 sweep Wednesday at Emmanuel, and Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton scored the first run and singled in the second run in game one for the Golden Tigers (16-6). They are ranked 21st in the NAIA and host Tennessee Temple on Tuesday.

Auto Racing

* The I-75 Raceway open practice scheduled for Friday could not be held because of the wet track conditions, but operators of the Sweetwater track are hoping for its season kickoff as scheduled tonight. The Four Cylinder Shootout will be held along with competition in B-Hobby, Sportsman, Limited Late Model and Thunder divisions. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with the drivers meeting set for 6. Adult grandstand admission costs $10 with children ages 6-12 admitted for $5. Pit admission is $25 for adults and $15 for ages 6-12, while the tier parking rates are $15 and $10.
