Chatt State completes baseball sweep of Cougars and more Chattanooga region sports news

Chattanooga State defeated Cleveland State 9-6 on Sunday to complete a TCCAA baseball series sweep of the visiting Cougars. Infielder-sidearmer Andy Clay drove in three runs and got the pitching save, facing five batters and recording six outs, and Hunter Parker was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Tigers. Chaz Vesser was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single, and he and Thomas Schmal each scored twice in the win. For Cleveland State, Wright Hackett was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Clay Hetland was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Cole Baxley and Chris Caffrey also had two hits each.

* Shorter University edged Lee 1-0 on Sunday in the rubber game of their Gulf South Conference baseball series in Cleveland. Bryan Mathews' first-inning RBI held up as the difference for the Hawks (10-11, 7-8), as Russell Crosby and Brandon Reynolds got the pitching win and save with the Flames' Jacob Potts, Ryan Zimmer and Chevis Hoover also sharp. Siosi Poti was 3-for-4 and Ben Holland was 2-for-4 for Lee (17-9-1, 8-8-1).

* Tennessee Wesleyan's baseball team, ranked 16th in the NAIA, won 9-6 on Friday at Bryan College and won 9-4 and lost 11-0 Saturday in their Appalachian Athletic Conference series. TWC (20-7, 9-2) scored five runs in the last two innings of Saturday's first game, breaking a 4-4 tie. For Bryan (22-8, 5-4), Jesus Astudillo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Chris Jeffries had two hits and an RBI in Saturday's loss. Kenny Knudsen (7-0) pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the 11-0 win, when Kelvin McMiller was 2-for-3 with a homer and five RBIs and Jeffries and Joey Underwood each had two hits and scored twice.

Track & Field

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga track teams began their outdoor season this past weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, and the Mocs finished sixth in the men's distance medley relay with senior John Gilpin also finishing sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase Saturday. Comprising the DMR were Austin Casassa, Geoff Nelson, Marquis Carter and Trevor Janssen. The UTC women's DMR of Hannah Chamblin, Kiaana Howard, Jessica York and Maddison Melchionna finished eighth. Friday, the Mocs' Paul Stuart finished ninth in the men's 5000, and Teghan Henderson returned to intercollegiate competition after a September stress fracture and was 11th in the women's 5k with teammate Amanda Cotter 14th.

* Three athletes from the Chattanooga Track Club Racing Team had solid finishes at the USATF Indoors Masters Indoor Track & Field National Championshps at Winston-Salem, N.C., over the weekend. Donelle Dunning won the 40-49 age group 60-meter dash in seven seconds flat, and Melanie Blake was second in the 35-39 60 hurdles at 11.64. In the 55-59 age group, Hugh Enicks finished third in the 3000 in 10:23.28, third in the mile at 5:17 and seventh in the 800 at 2:28.

Golf

* The UTC men's golfers finished 14th out of 15 teams Sunday in the Linger Longer Invitational tournament on the Great Waters Course at the Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga. Wes Gosselin shot a 67 in Sunday's final round, and he and teammate Liam Johnston finished tied for 30th at 1-over-par 217. Ewan Scott (223) was in a tie for 61st, Brooks Thomas (224) tied for 66th and Kory Webb (232) was tied for 77th.

Basketball

* Bryan College junior Brandon Cole from Crossville, Tenn., is an NAIA Division II third-team All-America basketball player after being the division's national leader with 29.14 points and 11.32 rebounds per game in the 2014-15 season. The AAC player of the year, he totaled 816 points and 317 rebounds and is 16 points short of 2,000 for his Lions career.

Lacrosse

* Ellie Murphy, Katie Riddle, Sally Anne Greenwod, Payton Fields and Relly King each scored three goals as the Sewanee women's lacrosse team held off visiting Greensboro College 24-20 and improved to 10-0 for the season Sunday. Murphy added four assists and Riddle matched Wittney Reed and Brita Brudvig with two assists for the Tigers, who got two goals apiece from Reed, Jannie Hannon and Molly Elkins and 12 saves from Crawfod Horan. Kirstin Norris and Natalie Ritchey had eight and five goals with two assists each for Greensboro (5-2).
