Temple's Giles a USCAA All-American and more Chattanooga region sports news

Tennessee Temple senior pitcher Hunter Giles from South Pittsburg was announced Tuesday as a second-team USCAA baseball All-American, on the eve of the beginning of the national tournament in Hampton, Va. Crusaders teammates Micah Wyatt and Caden Shadrick received honorable mention. Third-seeded Temple plays today against the College of St. Joseph in Vermont.

* Top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan opened the NAIA baseball opening series at Kingsport, Tenn., on Tuesday with a 3-2 night win over LSU Alexandria, which earlier beat Judson (Ill.) 9-4. Second-seeded Lindsey Wilson edged Freed-Hardeman 5-4 and faces Wesleyan (44-10) at 2:30 p.m. today. Shell McCain was 1-for-2 with a leadoff home run, two walks and two runs scored for TWC, and Wardy Polanco hit a two-run homer in the eighth to reward Jarrod Jameson with the pitching win for allowing only five hits in eight innings. Logan Longwith got the save.

* Second-seeded host Embry-Riddle beat third-seeded Bryan College 3-0 as the Daytona Beach Bracket of the NAIA baseball opening round got under way Tuesday. Joey Underwood was 2-for-3 but Langston Calhoun had the only other hit off Stetson Nelson for Bryan (42-17), which faces fourth seed Southeastern (Fla.), a 10-4 loser to Rio Grande, at 10 this morning. Lions ace Kenny Knudsen allowed seven hits and two earned runs against Embry-Riddle (37-17).

* Logan Campbell and Ryan Zimmer combined to pitch a three-hitter and Andres Nelo and Zack Zyburt drove in three runs apiece as top-seeded host Lee University beat Ohio Christian 13-0 to cap the first day of the NCCAA Mid-East Region baseball tournament Tuesday. Ohio Christian earlier edged Johnson 10-9 between Morthland's 14-4 win over Hiwassee and 12-0 loss to second-seeded Bluefield. Nelo and M.J. Brown each was 3-for-4, Chris Adams was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Zyburt homered along with Luke Toms for the Flames (32-18-1), who play Bluefield at 4 p.m. today. Hiwassee faces Ohio Christian at 1:30.

Tennis

* Dalton State, seeded 15th in the NAIA men's tennis tournament in Mobile, Ala., routed Oklahoma Baptist 8-1 on Tuesday and face No. 2 seed Embry-Riddle at 10 EDT this morning. "It has looked like we were going to get Embry-Riddle for a couple of weeks now," Roadrunners coach Zach Rogers said in a Dalton State release. "We also knew that at some point we would have to play them if we were going to compete for or win the national title. Great teams rise up when they are faced with great challenges."

Golf

* Dalton State is tied for seventh at 21-over-par 309 with the first round of the NAIA women's golf tournament not quite finished at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga. Lightning in the area led to a suspension of play Tuesday with some afternoon pairings incomplete. Caroline Griffin shot a 73 and Julia McQuilken had a 74 for Dalton State, which got a 78 from Rachel Rebne and a 78 from Erika Wardzinski.

* Sewanee junior Emily Javadi from Chattanooga is tied for 11th after the first round Tuesday of the NCAA Division III women's golf tournament on the El Campeon course at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort near Orlando, Fla. Javadi shot a 79, seven strokes behind leader Olivia Lugar from Washington University.

Softball

* An 1-0 loss in eight innings to Georgia Gwinnett ended Tennessee Wesleyan's softball season Tuesday in the NAIA national opening round series at Montgomery, Ala. TWC (31-9) had seven hits to five for third-seeded Georgia Gwinnett, but none of the fourth-seeded Lady Bulldogs had more than one off Kayla Byrom. Cassidy Littlefield was 3-for-4 for Gwinnett and singled behind Tori Heinemann's walk in the eighth. Alycia Fields scored Heinemann with a sacrifice fly.
