Glavine speaking at Bradley Sunrise Rotary gala and more Chattanooga region sports news

Five days after one Atlanta Braves recent-vintage Hall of Fame pitcher, John Smoltz, is the special guest Monday at the Best of Preps Banquet in Chattanooga, another will be in Cleveland, Tenn., for the Sunrise Sunset Gala that helps a large group of local nonprofit organizations. Tom Glavine will speak Saturday night at the Bradley Sunrise Rotary's benefit auction at Cleveland Country Club. Glavine, one of only six left-handers with more than 300 major league pitching wins, won 20 or more games five times and the National League Cy Young Award twice. He got into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014 with a 91.9 percent vote in his first year of eligibility. He now coaches youth baseball and hockey and is very involved with the Georgia Transplant Foundation. He will meet with Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond level table sponsors before the gala begins at 6 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and wine served as attendees check out the items for the live and silent auctions. An evening with Peyton Manning is one of the auction items, according to a BSR release; others include an Atlanta Broadway musical package, vacation packages, a local television advertising campaign and jewelry. A five-star dinner will be served at 7 p.m., the release said. Bradley Sunrise Rotary raised more than $420,000 from its previous five Sunset Galas and awarded more than $75,000 to 20 nonprofits after last year's event featuring Steve Spurrier. Volleyball

* Lee University volleyball coach Andrea Hudson has announced the signings of five players for the 2015 season: setter Hillary Hoffpauir from Phoenix; 6-foot-1 middle blocker Emily Philpott from Austin, Texas, by way of NCAA Division I member Nicholls State; 6-foot outside hitter Emily Bento from the Southern California area; versatile Sarah Wysor from Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville; and libero/defensive specialist Makayla Beebe from Aurora (Ill.) Christian School. Hoffpauir had 986 assists and 413 digs in her three years at Centennial High in Peoria, Ariz., and Hudson said she "is a dynamic setter that is quick to the ball and very decisive about each set. Her ability to run the court will be one of her strongest attributes." The coach noted the benefit of Philpott's experience in 29 matches at NSU and said she also was very quick to the ball and had a "high ceiling on her block." Of the others, Hudson said, "Emily was a highly recruited player out of California and was one of the top players at the Las Vegas Showcase this spring. ... (Wysor) knows how to play any position on the court. She has great ball control and she anticipates the ball well. ... The first time I watched Makayla play, it was her ability to read and react so quickly that drew my attention. You can tell she has worked hard on this as a defensive player."

* Dalton State recently signed Grace Hardin from Germantown, Tenn., and Hutchison School and Haley Cornett from Warner Robins, Ga., for the 2015 volleyball season. Both are versatile players. Cornett, who starred at Houston County High School, has played middle hitter, right side hitter, outside hitter and libero. Hardin, transferring from UT-Martin after one season, is a 6-foot-1 setter, right side hitter and middle blocker. "Grace brings a lot of height and talent to our team," DSC coach Bruna Langner said in a school release. "Haley will be an all-around player. She can play really well on the front row as well as on the back row."
